It's the 'ber months, so "10 before the end" challenges are coming. Do you know which titles you want to end the year with? What if there were 38 just under your nose by phenomenal authors, most of them debuts across genres and age ranges, conveniently placed in a carousel??? Seriously though, these books are phenomenal and so worth your time. I focused on some of the genres that I love to read the most, as well as some truly gifted local authors, then... I went a little wild. Can you blame me? Plus, you know I had to include my own salt-speckled historical fantasy novel! It's the PERFECT time to read it as the book takes place in September/October! Which of these books do you also recommend? Any (I'm sure MANY) I missed that deserve the spotlight? Also IG did not enjoy me tagging so many people in the post so please check out the books by: @danaiwrites @briannahwrites @lauracranehill @bytaylorepperson @portiaelanwrites @jillianlaineauthor @sohuneycutt @beccaacarter_author @sophhannanwrites @yuvanissue @samjamtimtam @graceviallwrites @florchien @patrickauden_ @vesperdoom @writelikeashark @kimberly_lynn_books @stopithester @thestickwitch by @slhawthorn

Taking a moment of gratitude for the rejections that got me to this point. As a normal element of the querying process (and any process in which you are sharing your work broadly), I got a lot of rejections! It was a difficult, scary, and exciting time during the year or so I queried my first book, then later going on submission. Hopefully I will have many more rejections to come, so I can also have the wins! Without going through these many, many rejections, I never would have found my "yes", which began more yeses, which formed into the book that would wind up on the USA Today Bestsellers list. That never would have happened if I hadn't had the courage to finally share my most vulnerable and personal part of my creativity for dozens and dozens of people to read, review, and reject. There's no one path for everyone. I'd argue there's no path you can follow identically. There are rules to learn, rules to break, and rules to un-learn. In the end it's you, your heart, and showing up enough places for that beating, messy thing to be understood and loved. Unfortunately, there's a lot of toiling. Fortunately, it can be so worth it. Thank you for every kind word, whether in a rejection or acceptance or offer or review! While I take pride in counting up and displaying my rejections, I also am deeply touched by the good news as well. (P.S. Let's be chill about the out of context snippets of query responses I've shared. I have ZERO ill will towards any agent, whatever their response to my book, and I truly appreciate their time, talent, and dedication in a wild industry to shepherd writers toward their dreams. All of this is shared in good humour!) by @slhawthorn

As August draws to a close and I bask in its dying rays (and, let's be honest, look forward to my favourite season), I want to share a fraction of the love I've been given over the last two months. Thank you to local bookstores like @eggheadbooks and @good.dog.books for being such amazing hosts. Thank you to @indigo for featuring my book on so many tables. Thank you to the librarians who ordered and recommended my book. And of course, thank you to @barnesandnoble for making me the Speculative Our Monthly Pick. Seeing so many displays with just my book (even if only from afar and through the lens of my American friends) has been like a dream. A specific dream I had when I was only 16 years old and declaring I'd become an author. Now more than 16 years after that promise to myself, it happened. And with such pomp and circumstance! Thank you to my wonderful team at @poisonedpenpress, whose excitement for this book never wavered πŸ’™ Thank you especially to every reader who took a chance on my book. For caring about these complicated sisters. For diving into my author's note all about Devils Island and Nova Scotia, the coastal land of my heart. For sharing with friends and book clubs and coworkers and random people you met on planes (okay maybe that was just my Dad...). Thank you for making my book a USA Today Bestseller. It truly means more than I can express, and I can express a lot 😭😭 I'm so excited for what the next chapter will bring, but I also want to stay in this feeling, just a little longer. That's what the end of Summer is for, right? ❀️ by @slhawthorn

Send this to your sibling and see which sister from the USA Today Bestselling book A FATE WORSE THAN DROWNING you both are! Don't have a sibling? Reply here and I'll be your honourary big sister 😀 I love both of these sisters!!! Unhinged and lost and in their own spirals, yet wrapped together in a net of both fear and devotion. (If you got an equal amount of each side you can choose either Douglas or Bridget instead πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ) If you're interested in what these two get up to on the blustery beaches of Devil's Island, Nova Scotia, check out my book! Available anywhere fine books are sold or lent! ❀️ (Thank you to Hazel and Pepper for letting me use your badly MS Paint images with wigs added.) by @slhawthorn
