A group of local Filipinos in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley are coming together to support folks who are impacted by today's tragedy in Vancouver at the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival. If you need support, or can support please let us know (please share): tr.ee/VanFilEmergency Will also add fundraising, event info, etc as they become available. At this point, there is so much grief, shock, and devastation and we are all doing what we can to support each other. Please note, this collective is not associated with any organizations. We are doing this at a grassroots level without organizational hats to centre care to those within our community. Maraming salamat for all of your care and support. by @slicedmangoco

On February 25th, @anakbayanbc, @_gabrielabc, @migrantebc, @bayancanada, @sulong.ubc, @slicedmangoco, and other progressive Filipino organizations in BC, commemorated the 38 years since EDSA 1. EDSA People’s Power is a reminder of the people’s might and will against injustice. We are honoured to be standing together side by side with those who have fought against and resisted during Marcos’ Sr. 's regime. Anakbayan and Sulong UBC call on the youth here today to commemorate and remember our revolutionary legacy in the face of imperialism and fascism.  Today, we are still facing the same sadistic tyranny under Marcos Sr’s son, Bong Bong Marcos. Bong Bong Marcos upholds his father’s legacy in 2024 by way of committing human rights violations, silencing the masses by way of the National Taskforce to End Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), police brutality, and red-tagging, a practice that tags activists and revolutionaries as communists. Red-tagging has endangered and in some cases, ended the lives of activists, journalists and concerned citizens who merely seek the government to do good for the people.  Environmental activists Jhed and Jonila Castro are recent victims of red-tagging and state repression. As these two youth organizers stood bravely to protect their community from imminent environmental disasters brought on by the Manila Bay reclamation project, Jhed and Jonila were forcefully disappeared by the local police force, emboldened by the National Taskforce to End Communist Armed Conflict.  After much outcry by their community members, they were immediately resurfaced but were coerced to denounce their activism in public.  However, these two brave youth actively went against the oppressive state’s wishes and denounced the NTF-ELCAC even after their abduction and torture.  The youth here in the diaspora stand by their side and condemn the human rights violations and state repression that youth organizers face in the Philippines.   ABOLISH NTF-ELCAC NOW!  END THE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS! (Statement continues in comments) by @slicedmangoco
Many thanks to all who participated in the EDSA 38 Art Build this week! As artists in solidarity with people’s struggles across the world, we recognize the Filipino people’s long history of struggle against fascist governments and how the US-Marcos-Duterte regime has worsened the conditions in the Philippines that cause mass migration of Filipinos to work overseas. We stand with the Filipino people back home and abroad in their fight for land, food, and justice! In the spirit of the People Power uprisings, see you tomorrow (Sunday, Feb 25) at Joyce-Collingwood Station at 2PM to collectively oppose and defeat the Cha Cha of the US-Marcos regime! Real land reform, not Cha Cha! #NoToChaCha #ArtistsFightBack Banner design by @sinagbayanphl ✊🏽 @eompoetry @anakbayanbc @sulong.ubc @migrantebc @_gabrielabc @slicedmangoco @bayancanada by @slicedmangoco
DATE: Monday, February 19 from 2PM LOCATION: 3090 Kingsway St (near Joyce and Kingsway) Looking for fun Family Day activities? Join us at an Art Build this Monday, February 19 at 3090 Kingsway! Come by from 2PM onwards to collectively paint banners, make signs, placards and even pinatas for our EDSA 38 banner drop & rally at next Sunday Feb 25. Art supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own brushes, paints, and cardboard (for signs and placards) if you have any! What is EDSA 38? The Sunday banner drop and rally will commemorate the 38th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution in the Philippines, where millions of Filipinos occupied Metro Manila’s main highway, Epifano de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), to end the unjust reign of dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos and 14 years of martial law. Today, the Filipino people continue to suffer economic woes and human rights abuses under the President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte. Food prices continue to soar while wages stagnate, and contractualization weakens job security. The looming Charter Change also threatens the Philippines with increased foreign control of its businesses, land and resources. While the people struggle, dissent is crushed by the police and military through the Anti-Terror Law and increasing militarization of rural areas. The EDSA People Power Revolution and its annual commemoration serves as a reminder that when united under a common struggle, the people have every capacity to meet their own demands. by @slicedmangoco
Join us for a banner drop and rally to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution. DATE: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25 TIME: 2-4 PM LOCATION: JOYCE COLLINGWOOD STATION EDSA 38 BANNER DROP + RALLY | PADAYON PEOPLE POWER! Over the course of 4 days, millions of Filipinos occupied Metro Manila’s main highway, Epifano de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), to end the unjust reign of Ferdinand E. Marcos and martial law. This moment in Philippine history speaks for itself: when united under a common struggle, the people have every capacity to meet their own demands. Today, the Filipino people continue to suffer economic woes and human rights violations under President Marcos Jr. and Vice President Duterte. Food prices continue to soar while wages stagnate and contractualization weakens job security. The looming Charter Change also threatens the Philippines with increased foreign control of its businesses, land and resources. While the people struggle, dissent is crushed by the police and military through the Anti-Terror Law and increasing militarization of rural areas. We commemorate this occasion to inspire and inform present-day organizing! Speakers and cultural performances aplenty - come celebrate and learn with us. All are welcome! Reject and resist Marcos-Duterte! System change, not charter change! No to historical revisionism! End human rights violations! Ang Tao, Ang Bayan, Ngayon ay Lumalaban! by @slicedmangoco
