POSTS STORIES REELS

I need your help please being my accountability buddy during this 6 month break I took between graduating residency & starting my first attending job as a PCP!!! it’s normal to be super burned out from residency and taking 1-6 months off if you can. my goal is to return to all the hobbies (you can see from my page that I have A LOT lol) I neglected or “save to try later”, finish the house projects I put on hold during residency, and LIVE. however, going from a super rigid schedule to zero schedule has me either too overwhelmed with options to start or starting more projects than I’ve finished.

that’s where you come in —I’m going to post each week moving forward of the sidequests I’ve started so you can make sure I finish them. I’ll show when they’re finished and if you want a tutorial, let me know!

thank youuuu xx maybe this will inspire you to reclaim your time and try out that new hobby you’ve been eyeing or miss too!

can you ask me about my hobbies instead? want to try my sourdough? come bouldering or hiking with me? what book are you reading now? what recipe are you trying out?

SHARE if you can relate
COMMENT your current favorite hobby please, I loveeee hearing about other people’s passions or recommendations ✨

and to anyone in healthcare, let this account show you that you CAN keep up some hobbies and passions throughout this hard rollercoaster of a career ride! you might not do them every day, maybe more like every month, but making the time for your mental health is worth it. also, your nonmedical passions will make you so much more relatable to different patients, too. please trust me on this!

if you’re new here, I’m Annie and I just graduated FM residency. if you want unfiltered advice, genuine portrayals of med life and tidbits of recipes, travel & outdoor adventures along the way then follow @sliceofannie 🫶🏼

it’s not the end of the world if you know medicine is the path for you and…

your MCAT score is <50th percentile
you get all rejections your first time applying
your GPA isn’t a 4.0
you get waitlisted
you don’t have parents who are medical professionals
you don’t have resources for new test prep materials or tutors or non-volunteer experiences

I’m here to help show you that. yes, we might have to work harder than our colleagues to prove ourselves. but your resilience, perseverance, and dedication to providing the best care you can for patients will be noticed.

SHARE if you agree and/or can relate.
COMMENT and SAVE for a reminder when you need it!
rooting for you 🤍

inpatient scaries who? become one of the most impressive intern/MS3/MS4s by mastering your precharting & prerounding routine with these tips! this is not complicated if you realize what your seniors and attendings are looking for —coming from someone who just graduated an inpatient-heavy FM residency

FOLLOW me for more unfiltered med journey advice from a 1st gen minority in medicine who maintained her outside passions along the way & shows you how

TIMESTAMPS:
0:07 goals of precharting & prerounding

00:16 the 3 questions your attending & seniors want you to answer about every patient —your framework for precharting

00:25 an example of my precharting flow from waking up —> getting to the hospital

00:44 how I prechart on the computer/EMR when I get to the hospital + what I write down

1:23 how I approach pre-rounding on patients. I also use this time to check in with nurses on the floor & answer any quick questions they have during shift change. **make sure your physical exam always includes heart, lungs + addresses chief complaint

1:33 the lifesaving hack I use to cut my notewriting time in HALF

1:45 conclusion

NOTE: this is what I did for FM/IM primary inpatient teams and is an example you can use to incorporate what you like and ignore what doesn’t work for your flow. you’ll also need to adjust the details depending on what specialty rotation you’re on. everyone is different, like I had co-residents who didn’t look at the EMR until they got to a hospital computer and arrived ~5:30 to do that. this is your time for trial and error to figure out how you’ll be the most efficient + not miss crucial details that would negatively impact patient care

halloween may be over but spooky season isn’t 💀

share the one that haunts you the most! it’s the GLP-1s not being covered on medicaid for me, when my patients have gained weight due to their other necessary medications, autoimmune or chronic pain syndromes & either cannot do the lifestyle options or tried them + covered bariatric meds and they’re not enough 😭

part 5: halfway through my sabbatical! this week’s completed project: fabric frame to add some pattern + color to my coffee nook. instructions in the comments

for those who’re new here, hi!!! this series is a cry for help —please be my accountability buddy during this 6 month break I took between graduating residency & starting my first attending job as a PCP (it’s normal to be super burned out from residency and taking 1-6 months off if you can). my goal is to return to all the hobbies (you can see from my page that I have A LOT lol) I neglected or “save to try later”, finish the house projects I put on hold during residency, and LIVE. i also want to show others in medicine that you can do the same! however, going from a super rigid schedule to zero schedule has me procrastinating starting or finishing projects.

that’s where you come in —I’m posting each week about the sidequests I’ve started so you can make sure I finish them. I’ll show when they’re finished and if you want a tutorial, let me know!

projects I’m still working on:
• faux stained glass for a front window
• making my new coffee nook more functional
• building my puppy an outdoor dog bed
• building a behind-couch console
• crochet or knit a fall top

thank youuuu xx maybe this will inspire you to reclaim your time and try out that new hobby you’ve been eyeing or miss too!

#CoethiaPartner fall reset day in my life 🍂🍁

✔️ soy matcha latte made
✔️ flu shot: done in literally 5 minutes & got a gift card from the pharmacy!
✔️ bouldering (shot didn’t slow me down!)
✔️gardening
✔️ fall sourdough bake —rosemary lime & honey oat

if getting your flu shot has been sitting on your to-do list since september (no judgment, same), this is your sign!!! i don’t like getting shots either but i get mine every fall and it’s genuinely the quickest errand. the flu shot is recommended for everyone 6 months and up, and it’s a small thing with huge impact to protect the people around you too 🫶🏼

if you’re on the fence or have questions, ask your primary care clinician! that’s what we’re here for ♥️ (this post is not medical advice). find more evidence-based public health info from @coethia.inc

easy recipe for high-fiber + protein plant-based chili below! perf for fall vibes 🍂🫘

hi I’m Annie & my credentials are board-certified family medicine physician who’s working towards being triple-certified in lifestyle med + obesity med, B.S. in Nutritional Sciences/Dietetics + worked as a full-time inpatient dietetic technician for a year, & co-founded a cooking lifestyle med elective at my med school that’s entering its 6th yr

dietary fiber is not talked about enough, but she is that girl who is split between soluble & insoluble forms that:
SOLUBLE (ex: fruits, veggies, legumes, beans, oatmeal)
• feeds good gut bacteria, prevents constipation (and hemorrhoids)
• decreases inflammation
• improves insulin sensitivity (prevent or lower type 2 diabetes)
• lowers levels of LDL cholesterol
• lowers risk of colorectal cancer
• feel full faster > promotes weight loss
INSOLUBLE (ex: grains, nuts, seeds, corn)
• does not contribute to calories
• bulks stool to help with regular bowel movements

to get these benefits, aim for ~25-35 g in food per day; 2:1 ratio insoluble to soluble

an easy way to pack in nutrients is vegetarian chili! i always whip this up when the weather cools & use this recipe to empty my fridge/pantry, so it changes
MY CHILI FORMULA:
aromatics (1/2 onion + carrots) + root veg (sweet potato or squash) + 2 kinds of beans + extra veg + broth (water, premade broth, bouillon, tomato puree or leftover marinara sauce) + spices (cumin, paprika, thyme, salt, pepper, turmeric) = fibermaxxed chili

shown:
• 1/2 onion diced
• 1 large carrot sliced
• 1 large japanese sweet potato diced
• 1 head broccoli
• 1 can garbanzo beans
• 1 can lentils
• frozen sweet corn
• 1/2 jar TJ’s autumn harvest soup
• 1/2 jar tomato basil marinara sauce
• 1 cup water
• 1 tsp cumin + 1 tsp paprika + 1 tsp thyme + 1/4 tsp salt and crushed black pepper

part 2 & the full conference clinical pearls is now on my grid in swipe form to SAVE as a reference + SHARE with your fave med friends 🧠🫶🏼 thank you to the amazing Frank Domino, MD for scouring the RCTs that’ll change how we practice so we don’t have to. some of these seem obvious, but it’s still validating to know there’s strong evidence behind easy lifestyle changes like getting sunlight, exercise, sleep & veggies to prolong a good life & memory! and lifestyle is the first line treatment, not pills or drugs, which aligns with many different cultures’ preferences.

comment what surprised you the most?
