The thing about having a photographer partner is that they take photos of you like this, and then your photos of them are that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Sorry Haley xoxo taken in OPUS 40 by @slightlyextra_

The great horned owl is the wise messenger, and it’s usually nocturnal. Seeing one is unexpected in the daylight.

Symbolically, seeing a great horned owl at unexpected time is a message to prepare for a significant life transition.

Scientifically, it means that their environmental needs require them to hunt longer hours (like when their baby owls hatch this time of year).

There’s a wave of changes coming my way, so I’m choosing to just take this as a sign. The heaviness that making eye contact with an owl brings is intense and intimidating but SO fucking cool. 10/10 favorite bird watching day to date.

When I was a kid, I used to fantasize about seeing the Grand Canyon. Turns out it’s pretty mid compared to Zion, and people really don’t talk about that enough.

Some thoughts you didn’t ask for:
• the Grand Canyon National Park museums and exhibits do not highlight Native Culture and the truth of stolen lands the way that they should. There’s some explainers, but it’s very white washed and littered with lies.
• GCNP feels like a propaganda machine for how great America is, and glazes over the blatant colonization and exploitation of Native Americans and their resources.
• Participating in the Jr. National Park Ranger programs at each of the parks is free, and is an easy step to get you out exploring versus just observing.
• Bryce & Zion exhibits and museums do a better job at explaining the history of the land. If you find yourself in this part of the country, prioritize your time in these two places.

This whole trip was about healing something deep within me. It’s a privilege to feel safe driving for hours through the night in desolate places, and it’s a privilege to feel safe camping and hiking alone in some of the most remote lands in the US. Just 5 years ago I would not have felt safe doing this, but a lot has changed ;) taken in Zion National Park by @slightlyextra_

I feel so lucky that I still get to do stuff like this with my dad. We biked 74 miles around Lake Tahoe for his 66th birthday with my brother in-law (@nohitup), and his dad, step mom, and step brother. My dad is the one who got me into biking in the first place, but we’ve never been able to do a long ride like this together because we live in different states. Family is complicated sometimes, but we get these non-controversial hours on the ride, and it makes everything feel less serious.

For perspective, driving around Lake Tahoe takes about 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic. We started at sunrise and finished 6 hours later with multiple stops along the way. Of the long bike rides I’ve done, this one was most challenging because of the traffic, the altitude (6,000 ft), and the elevation gain throughout the ride (4,000 ft). Not pictured is the 4 lane highway + no shoulder we biked on for ~12 miles. taken in Lake Tahoe, California by @slightlyextra_

It’s so silly but
I never pictured this life to be so surrounded by love;
Love to and from friends
Love between friends
Friends finding their lovers
Love to and from my siblings
Love for and from Haley

I feel so lucky to have friends and siblings that transcend space and time; we always have the best time (even when when we’re all mid-meltdown 😂)

Part 2; Siblings in Lisbon
