A lot of people first discovered @sonnyformiles after @barackobama included “Raleighwood Hills,” his collaboration with @lesthegenius and @jaxsonfree, among his favorite songs of 2019.

I’d actually heard of Sonny a little before that, mostly through friends and peers who went to NC State while he was there. I finally got to see him perform at @shakorihillsgrassroots in May 2024.

Fast forward to this year’s Shakori. Sonny wasn’t originally on the lineup, but after a cancellation he was added at the last minute. Accompanied by @emanthemann, @slim_hurk, @giveemsoul, @keys_4life and @ayrunvena.

And what a last-minute addition it turned out to be.

Of everything I saw this year, this ended up being my favorite performance.

Here are 2 minutes and 43 seconds of it. I’d watch that last minute especially. #northcarolina #nc #music #randb #soul taken in Chatham County by @slim_hurk

Made it out to a calisthenics park while in NYC. My bro @cameriian came out and put in work with me. Proud of him for sticking it out. ✊🏾 taken in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn by @slim_hurk
