Outputs for logarithmic transformation of a simple square grid. Made in #processing

P¹ᵢ ⱼ = Pᵢ ⱼ + (n * log (i, j))

Logarithms were invented to simplify mathematical calculations, before we got digital machines to do this for us. The demand for accurate logarithmic tables (remember the back side of your maths book in school?) was high amongst navigators and scientists.

Charles Babbage (the inventor of the computer) made some cashmoney by using his Difference Engine to print and sell logarithmic tables to reduce human error.

We are using logarithms here for a very different purpose - aesthetics. While the "identification" of logarithms in aesthetics (log spirals) has been around since the Renaissance, I would think that the "use" of logarithms in generating artistic structures is a very computational art innovation.

If you want to check out a fascinating steampunk alternate history version of computing (including logarithms), please get the graphic novel "The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage". Highly recommended.
