It took me almost two years after my first relationship ended to wade through the amount of lies and gaslighting I had been subjected to and finally understand and admit to myself that what I had been experiencing was SA. Two years I had been defending his name and repeating the excuses he had given me as justification for his actions, “a bad relationship with his father,” “a weird dream,” an “issue with lust” that he promised he was overcoming. It makes me sick to my stomach that I ingested these manipulations and forgave him over and over like the good christian woman I was taught to be.

A couple years later, when he wanted to rejoin a small house church I was in, I told the pastor I was uncomfortable with the idea and alluded to some of my experiences without going into detail ( I was still avoiding smudging his name). I was told that it might be a good time to look for forgiveness in my heart. As if forgiveness wasn’t what had opened me up to the abuse in the first place.

So many brave and courageous women have been sharing their stories recently so I’m adding mine. It’s fucking exhausting being a woman.

MEN do better. Every woman I know has either experienced SA or knows someone who has. That includes the women YOU know. I’m talking about your mom, your sister, your grandmother, your daughter, and your friends who are women as well. Imagine a life spent with your head on a swivel, knowing that every time you interact with a man, step outside of the house, or allow a new male presence into your life, you are taking a gamble. If that sounds dramatic to you, please go scroll through the myriad of posts that women have been making in the wake of the Cornell news. Protect women, not just the women close to you, every women.
