This album is just a classic in Charli’s discography. It is the perfect mix between experimental, daring and comercial. In my opinion, if you haven´t listened to Charli’s music yet, this project is a great start. Most of the songs feel gigantic despite their minimalistic production made mainly by A.G. Cook, like “Shake It” (wich features a portuguese verse) or “2099”, really the sound design and songwriting elevate the songs to another level. Also it has songs that remind me of the pop of my childhood but with a futuristic twist like “White Mercedes”, “Official” and “1999”. Charli has always been an innovative and visionary artist, this album proves it.

Éste álbum es simplemente un clásico en la discografía de Charli. Es la mezcla perfecta entre experimental, atrevido y comercial. En mi opinión es el mejor álbum para empezar a escuchar su música. La mayoría de las canciones se sienten enormes a pesar de tener una producción minimalista hecha principalmente por A.G. Cook, como “Shake It” (que por cierto tiene un verso en portugués) o “2099”, realmente el diseño sonoro y la composición son los que elevan las canciones. Además también tiene canciones que me recuerdan al pop de mi infancia pero con un diseño sonoro futurista como “White Mercedes”, “Official” y “1999”. Charli siempre ha sido una artista innovadora y con visión, éste álbum es prueba de ello.

The second part of “Infections Of A Different Kind Of Human” by AURORA, one of the most important artists in my life. This album feels like going into the unknown while holding hands with Aurora. The production is dark in songs like “Souless Creatures” or in “Mothership”. The lyrics are creative, emotional and intense. Mixing that with Aurora’s amazing vocal perfomance, makes it feel like you are in a celestial ritual. She sings about the planet, nature, justice, crying your feelings out. Aurora is such an inspiration and role model, she wants us to know there is power in being different.

La segunda parte de “Infections Of A Different Kind Of Human” de AURORA, una de las artistas más importantes en mi vida. Éste disco se siente como ir a lo desconocido pero tomados de la mano de Aurora. La producción es oscura en temas como “Souless Creatures” o en “Mothership”. Las letras son creativas, emocionales e intensas. Mezclar esto con su increíble interpretación vocal se siente como estar en un ritual celestial. Ella canta sobre el planeta, la naturaleza, justicia y de liberar tus emociones. Aurora es una gran inspiración y modelo a seguir, con este proyecto nos hace saber que hay poder en ser diferente.

Björk’s fifth album, made almost entirely acapella, its definetly an underrated proyect in her carreer. Medúlla shows how powerful the human voice is, how gigantic it can become. She changes the meaning of the word “acapella”, this album has all the range of a orchestra while still being just sounds made with the mouth. The songwriting but most importantly the arragement (made only by Björk) gives life to amazin songs like “Where Is The Line” or “Vokuro”. The beatboxing in “Who Is It” and “Triumph Of A Heart” hits super hard. There are other more experimental tracks like the classics among the fandom “Ancestors” and “Oll Birtan”, which are some of the more minimalistic songs in the album. Medúlla is an amazing listening experience, it feels primitive but majestic at the same time.

El quinto álbum de Björk, hecho casi totalmente acapela, es definitivamente un proyecto infravalorado en su carrera. Medúlla demuestra cuan poderosa y gigantesca es la voz humana. Cambia el significado de la palabra “acapela”, éste álbum tiene todo el rango de una orquesta, aún siendo solo sonidos hechos con la boca. La composición, pero sobre todo el arreglo (hecho solo por Björk) le da vida a grandiosas canciones como “Where Is The Line” o “Vokuro”. El beatbox en “Who Is It” y “Triumph Of A Heart” es intenso y agresivo. Hay otras canciones mas experimentales, como los clásicos en el fandom “Ancestors” y “Oll Birtan”, dos de los tracks mas minimalistas del álbum. Medúlla es una gran experiencia sonora, se siente primitiva pero majestuosa al mismo tiempo.

This EP encapsulates Tkay’s amazing singing and rapping habilities in just a few songs. From very chill R&B songs to agressive distorted rap bangers. Her flow is just as good as the tracklist continuity, it has really smooth transitions between most songs, wich gives the listener a pretty pleasant experiency. Songs like “My Flowers” and “24k” show her versatility as a performer. You could easily think there’s another artist featured in the song, but it is just Tkay. Another thing that really stands out its the production, the sound selection and mix makes this EP sound so fresh even now, four years later. “Awake” featuring JPEGMAFIA is just a straight up banger, it feels like a real colab. There is litrerally no bad songs in this proyect. As she says in “Grasshopper”: “Took years and it was worth it”.

Este EP encapsula las increíbles habilidades de rap y canto de Tkay en tan solo 8 canciones. Desde R&B suave, hasta rap saturado. Su flow como rapera se traduce perfectamente a la fluidez del proyecto, tiene transiciones entre canciones muy bien logradas, dándole al escucha una experiencia placentera. Canciones como “My Flowers” y “24k” demuestran su versatilidad como intérprete. Podrías fácilmente pensar que hay otro artista invitado, pero es sólo Tkay. Otra cosa que resaltar es la producción, la selección de sonidos y la mezcla le dan un sonido muy fresco, incluso ahora que han pasado cuatro años de su lanzamiento. “Awake” con JPEGMAFIA es simplemente un temazo, se siente como una colaboración real. Literalmente no hay canciones malas o pasables en este proyecto. Como ella misma dice en “Grasshopper”: “Tomó años y valieron la pena”.

Lady Gaga is an incredible artist all around, becoming one of my favorite musicians and performers of all time. With Chromatica she made the pandemic less of a burden. It is not a groundbreking album but its intrumentals were what we needed to be less depressed during this time. She is the best at making great danceable tracks while still having meaningful lyrics. Her voice is as powerful as ever on tracks like “Alice” or “Enigma” while still rocking the spoken word type of vocals on songs like “Babylon” or “911”. There are some tracks that are not super exciting for me, an example of that is “1000 Doves” and “Fun Tonight”, they can be a little predictable or generic. Chromatica is excelent at freeing your mind from sad thoughts.

Lady Gaga es una increíble artista en todo sentido, volviéndose una de mis músicas favoritas. Con Chromatica hizo que la pandemia fuera mucho menos pesada. No es un disco innovador, Sin embargo, este tipo de instrumentales son lo que necesitábamos para estar menos deprimidos durante esta época. Ella es la mejor para hacer canciones bailables con letras significativas. Su voz es igual de poderosa que siempre en canciones como “Alice” y “Enigma”, pero también devorando las partes habladas de “911” y “Babylon”. Hay algunas canciones que no son tan emocionantes para mí, por ejemplo “1000 Doves” y “Fun Tonight”, llegan a ser un poco predecibles y genéricas. Chromatica es excelente para liberar tu mente de pensamientos tristes.

Come To Daddy is an EP of IDM that has become a classic on his discography and the whole genre. It contains iconic tracks like the the Pappy Mix and Film, the last one being the one which has had an arise in today’s culture, demonstrating that besides this proyect being almost 30 years old, it is still current. A lot of nowadays music tries to emulate that breakcore and drum n’ bass aesthetics. This EP includes two remixes from “Richard D. James Album” released the year before. Each song takes you to different worlds, the contrast between the soft pads and keys with agressive and irregular beats are the key to Aphex’s sound. Let’s not forget the outro in “Funny Little Man” in which Twin uses a synthesised voice with a pretty disturbing message, classic of this artist’s sense of humor.

Come To Daddy es un EP de IDM que se ha vuelto un clásico de su discografía y del género. Contiene tracks icónicos como el Pappy Mix o Film, siendo esta última la que ha tenido un resurgimiento en la cultura actual, demostrando que a pesar de que este proyecto tiene un poco menos de 30 años, sigue siendo vigente. Incluso mucha música actual busca esa estética de breakcore y drum n’ bass agresivo pero etéreo. El EP incluye remixes de dos canciones de “Richard D. James Album” lanzado un año antes. Cada canción te transporta a mundos distintos, el contraste entre los pads suves y baterías irregulares y agresivas son el sello de Aphex Twin. No olvidemos el outro de “Funny Little Man” en donde Twin pone una voz sintetizada con un mensaje bastante perturbador, clásico del sentido del humor de este artista.

MASSEDUCTION made me fall in love with Annie’s music. She has become one of my role models as an artist. Her voice, songwriting, the odd guitarr riffs and the futuristic yet retro production combine and make a great art pop record. Even though it is not her best work, MASSEDUCTION is full of great and super intense fast songs like the title track or “Sugarboy”, but others super introspective and sad like “Smoke Section” or “Happy Birthday, Johnny”. Being the last one, the most remarkable for me, because Annie in past records has talked about her dear friend Johnny. In this song she reflects on the things she did wrong in their relationship, blaming herself when she knew he lived on the street. It is a very emotional song. “Smoking Section” has been one of my top songs to listen to when I’m feeling sad or angry, it brings me a lot of peace. As she says, “it’s not the end”.

MASSEDUCTION hizo que me enamorara de la musica de Annie. Ella se ha convertido en uno de mis modelos a seguir como artista. Su voz, composiciones, riffs raros de guitarra y la producción futurista y al mismo tiempo retro se combinan y hacen un gran álbum de art pop. A pesar de que no es su mejor trabajo, MASSEDUCTION esta lleno de increíbles, rápidas e intensas canciones como la que le da nombre a este proyecto o como “Sugarboy”. También tiene canciones introspectivas y tristes como “Smoke Section” o “Happy Birthday, Johnny”, siendo esta última la más notable para mí, pues Annie ha hablado de su gran amigo Johnny en anteriores discos. En esta canción reflexiona sobre las cosas que ella hizo mal en su relación, incluso se culpa por no ayudarle cuando sabía que él vivía en la calle. Es una canción muy emocional. “Smoking Section” se ha vuelto una de las canciones que más escucho cuando me siento triste o enojade, me da mucha paz escucharla. Como ella misma dice, “no es el final”.

La vita nuova is a really beautiful EP by Redcar, the first project I heard of his. It is a very intimate kind of pop music. Redcar’s passion and artistry really shows up, but also his amazing production skills. It was practically produced and written only by him. The production is minimalistic, but very rich at the same time. He really takes the listener to his universe. Even though it is a small proyect, it has super fun danceable tracks and other introspective and even misterious tracks. The title track with the wonderful Caroline Polachek is a great example of the danceable tracks, they make a great dynamic, (we love the tension between them in the music video). While on tracks like “Nada” the instrumentation and vocal performance take the listener to a dark dimension. Another thing that stands out is Redcar’s hability to write songs in English, French and Italian. Overall, this is an amazing introduction to Redcar’s music (and visuals).

La vita nuova es un EP muy bonito, es el primer proyecto que escuché de él. Es pop muy íntimo. La pasión y talento de Redcar florece en este EP, pero también sus habilidades de producción, siendo minimalista pero rica al mismo tiempo. Éste proyecto fue prácticamente producido y escrito solo por él. Realmente lleva al escucha a su universo. A pesar de ser un proyecto corto, tiene canciones bailables y otras introspectivas e incluso misteriosas. La canción que le da nombre a este proyecto con la increíble Caroline Polachek, es un gran ejemplo de las canciones bailables, hacen muy buena dinámica (amamos la tensión entre ambos en el video musical). Mientras que en “Nada” la instrumentación e interpretación vocal te llevan a una dimensión oscura. Algo que sobresale de éste EP, es la habilidad de Redcar para escribir canciones en inglés, francés y español. En general, este proyecto es una muy buena introducción al trabajo de Redcar, tanto musicalmente, como visualmente.

Sia - Some People Have REAL Problems (2008)

If you know me, you know Sia is a huge artist for me, at least it was for several years. Now, I kind of pretend she died because her music isn’t as good as it used to be, and also because she has made VERY cuestionable things in the past few years. Despite all of that, this album is one of my favorite albums of all time. This proyect is like my safe place. I have been listening this album for over a decade and I cannot get tired of it. I love the songwriting, it is clever, playful, loving, funny. Songs like “Academia”, “Playground”, “Lullaby” and “Death By Chocolate” have very well thought out lyrics. Sia’s performance is amazing, she is a great versatile vocalist, she can crush your heart with her ballads, and make you sing the catchy choruses. Also the music videos are super funny and creative. For me, this album is like a long hug from a friend, it has shaped me even as a musician.

Si me conoces, sabes que Sia es una artista muy importante en mi vida, a menos lo fue por muchos años. Ahora pretendo que murió porque su música ya no es tan buena como antes y porque ha hecho algunas cosas bastante cuestionables en los últimos años. A pesar de esto, éste disco es uno de mis favoritos de toda la vida. Éste proyecto es mi lugar seguro. Lo he escuchado por más de una década y simplemente no me canso de él. Amo las letras y composiciones, es inteligente, juguetón, divertido y cariñoso. Canciones como “Academia”, “Playground”, “Lullaby” y “Death By Chocolate” tienen letras muy bien pensadas. La interpretación vocal de Sia es increíble, es muy versátil, puede romper tu corazón con las baladas y hacerte cantar a todo pulmón los coros. Además, los videos musicales son muy graciosos y creativos. Para mí, este disco se siente como un abrazo largo de un amigo, me ha influenciado incluso como músico.

ROSALÍA - MOTOMAMI (2022)

A very complete album, with fun, sad, introspective, experimental, danceable and really contrasting songs. Even though it includes genres that may be difficult to unify in one project, the production and aesthethics perfectly unify all of the other contrasting elements of the album. As a result, we have songs like “DELIRIO DE GRANDEZA” or “CUUUUuuuuuute”. Although none of these songs last even three minutes, they have an unconventional structure, every section is different from the other. Obviously we cannot ignore Rosalía’s voice. For me, her delivery in songs such as “G3 N15”, “SAKURA” or “COMO UN G” is extremely emotional, vulnerable and powerful. Especially in the last one metioned. The extreme use of autotune makes the voice sound like its going to break. Rosalía uses autotune to highlight the mistakes of a raw performance. With MOTOMAMI, Rosalía shows us that folklore shoud and is not the enemy of the new music production techniques, as well as that pop can be experimental.

Un álbum muy completo, con canciones divertidas, tristes, introspectivas, experimentales, bailables y muy contrastantes. A pesar de que incluye canciones de géneros que podrían ser difíciles de unificar en un solo proyecto, la producción y estética unifica perfectamente todos los elementos contrastantes del álbum. Como resultado, tenemos canciones como “DELIRIO DE GRANDEZA” o “CUUUUuuuuuute”. Aunque ninguna de estas canciones dura ni tres minutos, tienen una estructura poco convencional, cada sección es diferente a la anterior. No podemos ignorar la voz de Rosalía. Para mí, su interpretación en tracks como “G3 N15”, “SAKURA” o “COMO UN G” es sumamente emocional, vulnerable y poderosa. Especialmente en ésta última, el uso de autotune extremo hace que la voz suene como que se va a romper. Rosalía usa el autotune para resaltar los errores de una interpretación cruda. Con MOTOMAMI, Rosalía nos demuestra que el folklore no es enemigo de las nuevas técnicas de producción musical, así como que en el pop se puede ser experimental.

Björk - Vulnicura (2015)

There are not enough words to describe Vulnicura, it is my personal favorite by Björk. This album has been with me through really sad times. I feel understood by it. It was the first album of hers that I listened to in its entirety. Although it is very abstract, atmospheric and has almost no hooks, there is something about it that makes it emotional, intimate, powerful, hearbreaking and healing. With this proyect, Björk returns to her classic mix of orquestral and electronic music, this time with a lot more saddness in her vocal performance and lyrics. Almost all songs were produced by Björk and Arca, it’s incredible to me how just two people made such a gigantic album. Björk is literally open hearted in songs like “family”, she is agressive, depressed, frustrated, desolated. We cannot forget “Björk Digital”, an inmersive experience she made for this album which I had the opportunity to go. Everything she created for this album gets you closer to her and the pain of breaking up her 13 year old marriage.

No hay suficientes palabras para describir Vulnicura, es mi álbum favorito de Björk. Éste disco me ha acompañado en épocas tristes para mí. Me siento comprendide por él. Fue el primer disco completo que escuché de ella. Aunque es muy abstracto, atmosférico, y prácticamente no tiene hooks pegajosos, es sumamente emocional, íntimo, poderoso, devastador y curativo. Con este proyecto, Björk regresa a su clásica mezcla de música electrónica y orquestal, esta vez con mucha más tristeza en su interpretación vocal y letras. Björk y Arca produjeron casi todas las canciones, me parece impresionante como solo dos personas crearon un álbum gigantesco. Björk está literalmente a corazón abierto en canciones como “family”, es agresiva, depresiva, frustrada, desolada. No podemos olvidar “Björk Digital”, una experiencia inmersiva que acompaña esta era en su discografía a la cual tuve la oportunidad de ir. Todo lo que ella creó para este álbum te acerca más a ella y al dolor del divorcio de su matrimonio de 13 años.

FKA Twigs - MAGDALENE (2019)

En 2019, FKA Twigs lanzó su segundo álbum “MAGDALENE”. Un álbum de art pop en el que reclama su dignidad y se libera de la presión de la ruptura con el actor Robert Pattinson. Ésta relación le llevó a tener problemas de autoestima, pues según los fans del actor, ella no cumplía sus expectativas. En "thousand eyes" nos habla de esto. "sad day" es una canción vulnerable y delicada a pesar de haber sido producida por Skrillex y Cashmere Cat. Twigs narra cómo le suplica a Pattinson que rescaten su relación, pero él tenía la presión de sus fans y familiares. La canción tiene un increíble video musical dirigido por Hiro Murai. La siguiente canción “holy terrain” en colaboración con Future, producida por Skrillex, Jack Antonoff y Arca, podemos resaltar la habilidad vocal de Twigs, que es lo que hace que esta canción no pase desapercibida como otra canción de trap.

El track "mary magdalene" explora a este personaje como una representación del empoderamiento femenino. La canción inicia diciendo; “A woman's work”, referencia a Kate Bush. En esta canción reclama las veces en las que ella y otras mujeres han sido silenciadas a lo largo de la historia, tal como con María Magdalena, considerada por muchos como una pecadora y prostituta. Twigs la ve igual a Jesucristo y se identifica con ella, por como la veían los fans de su ex pareja, y porque en el pasado también fue trabajadora sexual. Musicalmente, ésta es una de las canciones más intensas y expresivas.

El siguiente track "fallen alien" es mi favorito, pues es una canción llena de furia. Tanto, que las voces del demo inicial se mantuvieron en la versión final. Las siguientes tres canciones son mucho más introspectivas y espaciales. En "mirrored heart" Twigs reflexiona sobre la frase “Quien sea que ames, debe de ser un reflejo de ti mismo”. "Daybed" representa fielmente a la depresión porque quien amas, no luchó por ti. Finalmente *cellophane*. Un gran final para el proyecto. A pesar de ser una canción lenta, es muy dinámica y emocional. Resume el concepto del disco.
