While loosely following on from his two previous series – Xenia and Chiaroscuro - in its clear reverence for the still lives of the Dutch Golden Age, the emphasis underpinning Martin Prothero's Wild Flowers series is rather more anchored in his own locality – Devon in the west of England - and a campaign of gentle protest against modern farming techniques. He collaborated with a group intent on rewilding meadows of wildflowers in areas with a low species count, using traditional cyclical and regenerative techniques of seed collection, land preparation and planting, through to harvesting solely with the scythe. Shot towards the end of summer, he even utilised vessels made by this collective, who included amongst their number creatives and makers across a variety of disciplines.

Employing a technique he refers to as "slow light photography", Prothero literally paints his subject matter with a light source during the a long exposure in a dark room allowing for incredibly saturated colours and soft, painterly detail.

Each of these artworks are glass plates that have been covered with carbon and laid in the woods. As animals or insects pass over them they leave a trace of their presence that Martin captures and preserves as light boxes. No animals or insects are harmed or cajoled in anyway during the process. Carbon is present throughout the universe and in all living things. The time spent studying the ground prior to laying the plates aids Martin in his ability to capture these fleeting moments.

Wild Flowers by Martin Prothero.

Rooted in the Devon landscape, Wild Flowers reflects Prothero’s interest in local ecology, traditional still life, and the beauty of meadow flowers.

The series was made in collaboration with a rewilding collective working to restore wildflower meadows through regenerative methods - from seed collection and land preparation to planting and harvesting by scythe.

Shot towards the end of summer, the works capture flowers grown within this cycle of care, using vessels made by members of the collective.

New works by Martin Prothero from his series Xenia.

Xenia (ξενία) is an ancient Greek concept of hospitality, guest-friendship and ritualised exchange — a reciprocal relationship between host and guest, rooted in generosity, gift-giving and mutual respect. In ancient Greek society, it was both a moral obligation and a political imperative.

A wonderful gathering at @gbsfineart this Saturday. Warmth, excellent company, exquisite food and of course art. This marked the beginning of a two person exhibition, entitled A Distant Mirror, where I have the honour of showing with @emilyallchurch

Huge gratitude 🙏🏼 to the team at #gbsfineart for organising this and for the guests who attended. Must also mention @roots_wells for the sumptuous food.
