While my wildlife photography trips to the Canadian Rockies in the fall focus primarily on elk and moose, I’m always happy to encounter other animals and capture photo opportunities like these of this young bighorn sheep ram.

These were shot from my car as he walked by on the other side of the road. It was nice of him to walk in front of the yellow colors wan't it? by @slsommerfeld

After devistating wildfires in the Canadian Rockies in 2024, the landscape has changed dramatically.

Initial vegetation and productivity often return within months to 2 years after a fire, which you can see in this image. Saplings appear in 4 to 5 years under good conditions, while full mature forest recovery typically takes decades, up to 100 years in some cases. Needless to say, I won’t see full recovery in my lifetime.

Wildlife however, are resiliant. They take advantage of the new growth and other food sources that are available after the burn.

During my trip to the Canadian Rockies this year I was fortunate enough to see a species that I had never seen before...a Northern Hawk Owl; known scientifically as Surnia Ulula.

It was mid-day, sunny, and the elk and moose were quiet so many of us were back at camp taking care of things and resting when this beautiful owl showed up. Needless to say, we grabbed our cameras and ended up spending over an hour with it. It was amazing to see its behaviors and head movements. by @slsommerfeld

My two favorite seasons are autumn and hockey 😂 I think some of my friends can relate to that.

The elk and moose ruts in Sep./Oct. are what draw me to the mountains. How can you not love the majesty of creatures like this? Love the Canadian Rockies 🏔️🏔️ by @slsommerfeld

Something you don’t see every day! Six moose at a pond. Wow! The smaller (big) bull on the left kept getting removed by the bigger guy on the right. And the cows also chased each other, as they apparently don’t want to share. lol It was quite an evening in the Canadian Rockies. by @slsommerfeld
