Today was the first annual Neurodiversity Education Day!! We had dynamic speakers, research, and insights from neurodivergent folks and their parents who live in the chronic stress of inaccessible schools, work places, healthcare systems, and society. With over 100 graduate students and behavioral health professionals, we enjoyed interprofessional collaboration and learning. And some good pizza. #neurodivergent #interprofessionaleducation @slu_official @slu_somiiiò @katierootes @qtclinic taken in Saint Louis University School of Medicine by @slu.mft

This week’s alumni spotlight is on Sean Reilly! Sean graduated in 2019 and took advantage of clinical experiences with children to elders. Faculty remember him as a deeply engaged and compassionate student and clinician. He is now fully licensed as an MFT in Missouri and works at @sandhillcounseling!

His advice to potential new students: “To anyone interested in pursuing an education in counseling, I would advise you to lean into the unknown and learn to explore. For many, it is an adjustment to acclimate to the autonomy offered to a graduate-level student. You will be guided by a wonderful faculty with immense knowledge, but your journey is yours alone, so own it, and find out what you want to learn. Much of your journey will be spent exploring yourself, for better or worse. It is an experience that can be enlightening and frightening, at times, but is essential to being the best clinician you can be. Lean on those around you when in need. They can relate to the highs and lows of the process, and in this respect, you are not alone. Finally, recognize that you are providing an essential service, so respect the role, and respect the value you bring to the field. You will do great! Good luck!” by @slu.mft

Alumni highlight from the Couple and Family Therapy MA program - Morgan Gaeke!

Morgan is currently an LMFT working in rural Missouri. She is a warm and thoughtful clinician who, in hindsight, sees live supervision and support of faculty and peers during anxious first sessions as incredibly impactful. The experiences set her up to feel confident and competent even at early stages of therapist development.

Morgan offers this wisdom to current and future SLU MA students - “My education at SLU was priceless. I remember being much more prepared for face-to-face clinical work than my counterparts at other graduate schools when I started my internship at BJC Hospice. Plus I actually miss having my classmates and professor giving me feedback from behind the mirror!” taken in Saint Louis University by @slu.mft

Alumni highlight from the Couple and Family Therapy MA program - Dasha Carver!

Dasha is a doctoral student now pursuing a PhD in Counseling Psychology. She is a determined and goal oriented professional. The faculty remembered how she excelled, offered valuable support to her peers, and learned self-care along the way.

Dasha offers this wisdom to current and future SLU MA students - “TAKE A MENTAL HEALTH DAY. Your clients will be fine, your assignments will be fine, your professor is not going to scold you. This is especially hard to hear for us first generation and international students who are worried about disappointing others or making a mistake. The work will still be there when you are ready to come back to it.” by @slu.mft

This was probably the best costume/Fall bake-off turnout in our program’s history! Congratulations to Erendira, one of our first year master’s students, for winning best dessert. Results for the best costume are still coming through. Thank you to the faculty in Psychology for helping with the dessert judging (and tasting). by @slu.mft

Have you met any of our alumni?!?!?! For the next two weeks our social media is dedicated to hyping our incredible alumni from the doctoral and masters program.

First up is Dr. Mosiah Gonzalez, a 2024 graduate, who just started his academic career at Weber State University in Utah. He came in excited to take advantage of teaching, research, and clinical experiences in the doctoral program. Dr. Gonzalez offers incredible words of wisdom to new and potential students sharing - “While it’s important to hold yourself to high standards, you cannot forget to simultaneously give yourself some grace as a graduate student. You’re still learning. Stay humble, teachable, and curious. Trust that the faculty have your best interests in mind - they want to see you succeed. You will mess up, you might even fall short or fail in some areas. That’s part of the journey. This program has so many exciting opportunities - take advantage of them.” by @slu.mft
