Congratulations to Evan Genthon (team captain), Landon Winters, Emma Gorton, Ella Bodnar, My Tuyet Doanh, Sofia Quintana, and Jordan Britt, for earning Second Place in the Concrete Bowling Competition at the 2026 MidAmerica ASCE Student Symposium. 🥈

In this competition, teams develop a custom lightweight concrete mix and cast two bowling balls. During the event, one ball is used in a full 10-frame game to evaluate its performance on the lane, while another is tested under a compressive load to assess its toughness. Both balls are judged on how well they meet the target diameter and weight requirements, as well as how closely they match each other.

ASCE-SLU’s achievement reflects the team’s strong collaboration, technical expertise, and engineering skills, and illustrates the impact of experiential learning at #SLUCivilEngineering.

The ASCE SLU 3D-printed bridge team earned two awards at the 2026 Mid-America ASCE Student Symposium: The Highest Stiffness Efficiency Award and 2nd Place Overall. 🥈

Congratulations to team members Grace Reed (Co-Captain/Structural Design Lead), Kelly Tuong (Co-Captain/Structural Design Lead), Ayana Asanova (Research/Fabrication & Manufacturing Lead), Kyle Le (Research & Manufacturing Lead), and Tyler Michelstetter (CAD & Digital Modeling Lead) for this accomplishment. A total of 17 universities participated in the symposium.

The ASCE 3D Printing Competition challenges student teams to design and manufacture scale-model bridges using additive manufacturing to test structural efficiency and innovation. Participants are scored on Aesthetics (visuals and presentation), Bridge Performance (load-bearing and stiffness), and Construction (assembly speed). This framework ensures that students balance creative architectural design with practical engineering constraints associated with rapid infrastructure assembly.

This achievement highlights SLU’s commitment to cutting-edge, forward-looking engineering education where students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies that are shaping the future of infrastructure, construction, and design.

The team also acknowledges the SLU Center for Additive Manufacturing (CAM) for its support, which was instrumental in the successful design and fabrication of the bridge.

Congratulations to second-year civil engineering student Mayrol Juarez-Chiovatero for earning Second Place in the Daniel W. Mead Paper Competition among 17 universities participating in the 2026 ASCE Mid-America Student Symposium.

The Daniel W. Mead Prize is an annual ASCE competition that challenges students to explore professional ethics through an original paper on a specific, yearly assigned topic. This year’s topic was “Engineering the Public Welfare: How Civil Engineers Engage and Advance Communities Through Ethical Infrastructure Design in Accordance with the ASCE Code of Ethics.”

This award showcases how SLU civil engineering students are prepared to thoughtfully address real-world challenges through ethical and impactful engineering. Way to go Mayrol!
