a friendship of 20 years comes with many tiny delights; a collective hyperfixation on the lion king, a shared emo phase, nights spent playing sims on the family desktop, and lunch dates that transitioned from elementary, middle, and high school cafeterias to izakayas and teppanyaki spots across japan. then there are the big ones, like spending the afternoon with you and your fiancé right before you became husband and wife.

during this photo session, an older man observing us wrote a quick note for you all on a napkin wishing you many happy years together. we’ve spent most of our lives as chosen family and i’m so grateful to be a witness to the life that you all will continue building together.

last year, i went to japan for the 2nd time, and spent a few days alone in the greater tokyo area. somehow, it was the most ‘myself’ that i had felt in a while.

a reflection on home, family, history, and time; something to call our own is a celebration of my house’s 100th anniversary. i wanted to create a space to honor the people and memories that last in a world so rapidly moving.

when i initially started this project, i thought that the gathering at my home would be the grand finale to my research and ideation — it was really just the catalyst for further exploration. my granny bought this house in 1992, when atlanta looked a lot different than it does now, and i can only imaging the city's landscape when it was built in 1925.

i’m so thankful for the friends and family that came together to commemorate this occasion with me. here are some photos i’ve gathered of the people i call home. ❤️ taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @slumpiera
