A lifetime of documenting for identity, for keepsake, and sometimes for sport, has left Katelyn Slyer with an archive worthy of the Stills Gallery.

“I consider myself an old soul, a collector of memories almost to the point of hoarderism.”

From punk shows and pubs to family life and the quieter moments in between, @slydawg83 compulsively captures the world around her.

Good Chat: Katelyn Slyer. Now live on HS Magazine. Read the feature, then preorder her new photobook, The Middle. Link in bio.

School holidays… welcoming slower days. Wishing for less flies.. by @slydawg83

A few snippets from my first published book ‘The Middle’ Slydawg Diaries. Shot between 2004-2010. It is a visual diary of this era. Travelling between Wollongong and London. The Middle is just that. One of 3 books planned with 3 decades of work. Presales are up now for anyone interested, please check the link in my bio. Hopefully if I get enough sales I’ll be able to start the next one!!! I’d really appreciate the support to keep making this project a reality. And I hope everyone enjoys the trip… by @slydawg83

@ferriswhiskey here with another photographer whose work I wanted to share - Katelyn Slyer (@slydawg83) and her upcoming book, The Middle.

Made between 2004 and 2010, The Middle is a visual diary of those strange formative years when identity is still being negotiated and everything feels a little more immediate. Katelyn’s photographs capture the grit, textures, style and freedom of a generation sitting right on the fault line between analogue intimacy and digital acceleration: a period when digital photography was only beginning to enter her own practice.

There’s a looseness and honesty to these pictures; they’re personal memories, but with enough distance now that they’ve become something else too: a record of a particular time, culture and way of being young that already feels strangely remote.

As Kathryn ‘Chippy’ Morgan wrote in Wanderer Magazine: “That’s what The Middle offers: an archive that is both personal & culturally significant.” Or, perhaps more evocatively: “You can almost smell the layers of hairspray and warm cider…”

The Middle is 176 pages, A4, hardcover case bound, signed and numbered, with preorders shipping from late November / early December.

Preorders are open now through the BOOK PRESALE link in @slydawg83’s bio, or via her website:

During the decisive moment, do you step back… or step in?

A true compulsive photographer, Katelyn Slyer’s urge to document suppresses her inhibitions. The fly on the wall becomes a bug in the grill, heckling for an angle. A paradox: she’s equally comfortable out of her comfort zone.

“Photography is the only thing I’ve stuck at.”

From Katelyn’s earliest memories sitting for portraits in her father’s homebuilt studio, through The Oxford Tavern eight nights a week, to motherhood, a camera has always been within reach.

A lifetime spent documenting the people and subcultures around her, @slydawg83 dials in for a Good Chat on compulsion, intimacy, getting too close, and building an archive worth keeping.
