I’m so excited to be collaborating with @isabellacassell @jointhefull for this special event.

Isabella is an olive oil somellier. Nettie is a chocolate somellier. Together, we are planning a fun, informative and delicious evening @fabriksocialspaces

Come and celebrate the harvest with us. We will savor two time honored foods, olive oil and chocolate.

This will be a slow space to observe the changing of the seasons while sampling curated selections of olive oil and chocolate from different origins.

Food is precious. Time to slow down and fully rejoice in food and community. by @smallbatcheducation

Walk & Taste: Coffee, Chocolate, and How the Prized Became Ordinary

Eric Chung and Nettie Atkisson are combining forces again to explore lower east side chocolate and coffee shops. Link in Bio

Join us for a guided neighborhood walk featuring craft chocolate tastings, specialty coffee, and meaningful conversation.

Coffee and chocolate are everywhere. They’re deeply woven into our collective culture and personal histories. Although we take them for granted, it was only through a particular combination of circumstances, choices, and chance that they became the staples they are today. We’ll trace the history of coffee and cacao through the unexpected twists and turns of their development, from global trade and old traditions to childhood treats, specialty products, and strange new combinations.

We’ll wander through the neighborhood, stopping at premium craft coffee and chocolate shops and tasting along the way.

Join us for genuine connection, new tastes, and fresh perspectives on familiar and unfamiliar things.

The Agenda

Coffee & Welcome – Dark Matter Coffee
Moon Coffee Lab – Pour-overs, and the science and craft of coffee
Economy Candy – A cornucopia of classic candies
Roni-Sue’s Chocolates – Creative craft chocolate
Daniel Corpuz Chocolates – Handcrafted Filipino-Asian inspired chocolates, as seen on Netflix’s School of Chocolate
Closing Conversation – Columbus Park

What’s Included

Two samples from Singaporean craft chocolate makers of Fossa Chocolate
1 truffle from Roni-Sue’s Chocolates
1 truffle from Daniel Corpuz Chocolatier

What’s Not Included

Coffee or hot chocolate purchased at Dark Matter at the start of the walk
Coffee purchased at Moon Coffee Lab
Any additional chocolate, candy, or other treats you decide to buy along the way by @smallbatcheducation

I went to Oaxaca for two weeks to learn more about the history and process of chocolate and chocolate drinks. Thanks to @shavacueva of @bebidasdeoaxacamexico for organizing visits to see @carinasantiagob @tierraantigua and @xhobe_humoysal.

Why is foam important? Like so many things, it depends on who you ask.
1. It is the ultimate sign of respect to provide a guest with a foamy drink because the foam takes so much time and effort to create.
2. One Zapotec man working @aguamarga.lab told me that the foam reminds them where they came from as People of the Clouds.
3. Someone told the foam feeds the spirit while the drink below feeds the body.
4. Others have mentioned connecting with ancestors in the process of making it.
5. Others say it makes it taste better.

Many reasons. A lot of work. Beautiful traditions.

What have you heard? Share below. by @smallbatcheducation

🍫 Thank you for an incredible evening of craft chocolate conversations!

A huge thank you to 170+ guests from over 37 countries who joined us last night for 'From Bean to Border: Navigating Craft Chocolate Across the UK, US & Europe.'

The chat box was buzzing throughout, and the Q&A brought so many thoughtful questions and perspectives from around the world.

A special thank you to our wonderful panellists Nettie Atkisson, Tommy Purkis and Rosario da Cunha Brandão, who shared fascinating, real-life insights from their respective markets - what is driving the craft chocolate movement, what is still missing, and what we can learn from one another.

That was really the heart of the conversation: looking beyond the surface to understand what is happening on the ground in different markets, and how we can connect, share ideas and work together to help the craft chocolate movement grow and reach more people.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the conversation, shared your experiences and brought your passion for chocolate into the room. 🌍🍫

The movement grows when we connect.

If you love the @midwestcraftchocolatefestival @cocoasupply cocoasupply makes it possible.

A shoutout to @midwestcraftchocolatefestival sponsor Leila, who has a vision and commitment to the festival that makes it better each year.

The FIRST time I ever had chocolate sweetened with only the pulp (cacao fruit) was @cocoarunners and it was @my_awki Purity. That was at least 5 years ago. They must be the first or some of the first to do this in modern craft chocolate. Because I have always loved their products, I could not wait to visit them.

After @cocoasupply gave us the most amazing tour of Ecuador, @chocochaser and I really wanted to meet Nathalia and Aziz. They welcomed us with fresh cacao juice and SO much chocolate. Definitely a highlight of my life.

Our short visit to Awki was filled with some of the best chocolate out there, blessings, learning, freeze dried samples (incredible cacao pulp and juice) and lots of loving energy from @my_awki Too busy eating and learning to get many videos. A day to remember. taken in Quito, Ecuador by @smallbatcheducation
