Come see @shayferjamesmusic with us on May 3rd in Los Angeles!

I’ve known Shayfer since 2009, when I was working in immersive costumed events in NYC and we’d book him regularly. We lost touch, and I just recently stumbled on his music again… I’m still as obsessed as ever! Lighthouse Keeper has been on repeat for weeks. ✨

Turns out my friends are ALSO hardcore fans, so we made a little video to show off Shayfer’s magical world. 🤍

Villainous Thing is such a hot song, and we tried to do it justice. Did we do ok? 🫦

Here Lies Love closed yesterday. After seeing it for the first time in February, it quickly became all I could think about, listen to, and talk about. I searched how many times I’d mentioned it over text, and it’s ridiculous, first of all, and not everything is shown here, but I think it shows how much of an impact this show has had on the SoCal Filipino community (myself especially included!).

My mom was born in Manila, moved to Guam when she was very young, and then moved stateside with the rest of her family. I’ve never been to the Philippines myself. I’ve never learned Tagalog. I don’t think it’s a unique story to children in any sort of diaspora, growing up feeling disconnected from your own culture, not being able to learn in the ways you’d want because you’re smack dab in the middle of a stifling white hegemony, but I don’t think it makes it any less painful to walk around feeling like you aren’t American (read: white) enough for the Americans, and you haven’t been raised in the culture, so you aren’t Filipino enough to even try.

Here Lies Love, I knew, was about former First Lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos. I did not know about the Ninoy Aquino of it all. During his very first song, from the moment the words “I am a child of the Philippines” left @itsjoshdelacruz’s mouth, with such joy and pride and warmth, not to be hyperbolic, I felt the universe shift and something click into place. I burst into tears. Knowing nothing about Aquino, or the People Power Revolution, I left the theater with so many more questions about myself, my people, and what being Filipino meant to me. Here Lies Love was utterly heartbreaking. It was completely inspiring. It was like nothing I’d seen before, and everything I didn’t know I needed.

I saw it five more times after that. (And was, somehow, even blessedly able to see the magnificent @sarahcckay fill those wicked, wicked shoes.)

Thank you so much @ctgla for such a stunning work of art. Thank you to the cast and the crew for all of your hard work and dedication into telling this story. You’ve changed my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you. by @smallestkyle
