I find myself not posting projects because I want to take nice photos. In reality that doesn’t happen & the moment passes. All that’s left is a fond memory—“Natsukashii” as the Japanese say…

That’s the underlying theme of my favourite ASICS we’ve done to-date, the GEL-Kayano name is revered globally but especially in Australia. So we made these, the GEL-Kayano 12.1 “Natsukashii”

They’re a departure from our previous ASICS, though the spirit is still there. Infinitely wearable & stacked with “if you know” details, it’s a high water mark for our partnership.

No projects come to life without many people. From working on design with @patrick_pleats & developing it with our team at ASICS—to nailing campaign creative with @sub.bio.studios & every meeting/discussion/late night chat with the UT family—it’s always an honour. At all levels, we do it together as a team.

There’s a lot of time in this one…

Most was spent on the palette. The concept was to assemble almost-colours in a way where each felt equal parts unnecessary & integral.

The way the colours seem to change is one of my favourite features. The Acid Green shifts between apple & chartreuse depending on the light. Periwinkle mesh seems like equal parts blue & lavender whilst Copper Brown grounds everything. The Sage Green almost disappears amongst bolder colours, but helps tone things down. The final touch came once Blossom Pink found it’s way into the mix—a late addition which lifts the entire shoe. You’ll notice the shift when swapping laces.

The matte synthetics bring something different to the 860v2, playing with light in ways I doubt leather could. Deep structured mesh contrasts the rest of the shoe’s smoothed-out finish. Reflective graphics are a callback to the UT 1906 which came before it.

The shoes feature other homages to previous UT New Balance—large mesh off the original Backyard Legends, mesh from Legends II on the heel & novel Sure Laces.

Excited to see these out in the wild & taking on their own life. by @smallgainz

Clearing out a lot of stuff & discovering things well past their use-by date. Thankfully these #M1500IB had a lot of wear so I can’t be mad, but there’s plenty more that will never see the light of day.

Just got this beast back from @ascent_cycles and wanted to share. This is a random Facebook Marketplace find which came from the Sunshine Coast with help from @taz4000

It’s a 1983 Fuji Sundance mountain bike.

Story goes, the original owner was an old American bloke who was heading back to the US. He gave it to his neighbour to sell on his behalf. Judging by the shop sticker, it was purchased in Utah back in the ‘80s, coming to Australia with the owner.

As it stands, the bike hasn’t had much more than new tyres/grips & cables. That’s it… To call it “clean” is under-selling it. When I removed the original tyres they’d never been touched. Even original tubes from ‘83!

Components are early MTB — ie lots of road touring stuff. It’s brimming with Suntour jewellery, including the famed Power Thumb Shifters. It rides like an ‘80s Toyota 4x4 – mechanical, slow & charming. I’m also pretty sure it’ll outlast us all. by @smallgainz

As a matter of patriotic duty, I did my best to spot all the archival references that @uptherestore squeezed into the Backyard Legends.

The name & story are good fun but the shoe itself is proper serious – there’s a lot going on once you know what to look for. Impressive work from a fantastic bunch of people.

The last couple of weeks have really been getting me down & I’ve been wanting to show you some of the changes I’ve made to the Crust.

So, here’s Baby Blue a bit over a year since I got him.

There’s 3 particular upgrades that were a game changer for me: the gearing is now Sram Eagle, my @bagsxbird bag & the @klite_dynamo_power light setup.

So many great makers have created ways to help me enjoy riding my bike more & I’m keen to keep truckin’ along.

Hopefully I’ll get a chance at bigger adventures with @michelleeskola in 2022 by @smallgainz

NEW BIKE DAY
2020 has been a roller coaster to say the least, but one constant distraction has been this thing.

The March lockdown allowed me to reconsider some things & what resulted was a clear-out of all my vintage BMX parts & quite a few pairs of sneakers to fund this new bike.

Thank you so much to everyone who put up with my stupid questions over the last few months, it’s been fun for me so I hope I didn’t ruin your days too much.

Special mention to Gypsy @faraci.cc for helping build my version of the ultimate cycling machine that will most definitely be under-utilised.

Some more stuff to do but for now I gotta get used to riding this thing 👀
