Sometimes you just know that a photo’s gonna stick with you for years. I love this one. We all look so worn out and happy. And we were. Legs loosey goosey in the sand, heads resting however they wanna, muscles relaxed and throbbing, moans and groans, everything real and right there. Snacks passed around. Tired lungs still hungering. The type of sunlight that wouldn’t dare burn ya, feels like. Nothing loud except what’s s’posed to be (the ocean crashing on an exhale. A big thing breathing). Maybe you know what I’m talking about. by @smappygail

Some fun facts about my two-year-old pup:
1. She is a Texan.
2. My friend @meekyoung_lee found her on the street when she was four months old.
3. I dropped her off at the shelter, cried in bed for three days, and then went and picked her back up. They placed her in my arms wrapped in a ratty little towel.
4. Winty’s bday has been determined as being the first day of summer, whenever that day may fall.
5. Her ears used to seem too big, now they seem a little too small.
6. She is a snuggler and a kisser. She loves love.
7. An old man once threw a punch at her when she barked at him (she’s protective) (he missed and looked dumb).
8. She is night-colored, as @savannahandsongs once so eloquently put it.
9. She came into my life when I really needed her (even though she gave me (and my roommates) hell at first and I literally hated her guts).
10. She can’t catch things in her mouth for sh*t and she sucks at fetch.

I love my winty. I wish she had IG so I could tag her!!! She’s pretty Offline though. Something to do with “no opposable thumbs”.

You asked, I listened 🦻🏼(nobody asked) (at least not verbally!!!) here I am gooning to my own soundscape. I sat down this weekend to try and cover a Joe Vann song using my looper and guitar, and it immediately sucked so I turned to the synth where I have *some* sense of how to layer things. I wasn’t thinking of it at the time but am remembering now that for my first lesson with a new piano teacher when I was 9 or 10, the opening exercise was for Teach to play a jazzy musical core that I could just riff on top of. She said “for a first lesson I always want my students to see that they can Make Music” and told me to go for it. She started on her swingy chords and somehow my hand had a sense for where I might travel on the scale and complement things. With every moment that “worked” I felt an energy build. Things came out of nowhere — I’d take a risk on a note and purely by chance, it’d match where she had just jumped to on the keys. Sometimes it was a rich harmony, or a spooky dissonance, or something mournful. Sometimes it would totally fall apart, but if you could find the note that resolved things, your whole body might respond. We finished and I remember tempering my excitement because it was so big I thought it’d make me act weird. I felt like I had tasted the world.

This video is several minutes of what was nearly half an hour of tinkering with sound. I’m not under any impression that many people (if anybody) will sit here and watch it all the way through — and that’s not why I’m sharing it, so rest assured that the pressure’s off! I just want to say, I feel strongly about the importance of finding ways to let your body and soul speak to you. That’s what happened for me here. I had hoped to maybe capture something but at this point wasn’t sure my phone was recording anymore and refused to risk my flow by looking. I faced loss in this sense and exhaled as I realized it: this song will never be played again. Cool.

So, knowing that, it became a question of “how reliably can I be with myself?” Which made the sound feel like a net being pulled through water, gathering up my drifted bits. by @smappygail

For posterity: reflecting on it, I’m a very different person from who I was when this project started. Not necessarily “because” of the project, but it’s fun to grow alongside something. :) Feeling grateful today for the things I get to learn about and be a part of alongside really tenacious, goodhearted people. by @smappygail
