I’m in Sunny Malta, at a restaurant tucking into a lovely steak, pause. I’m doing Photography for @dltbrunch (#dltmalta) recovering from the night before after having 4 hours sleep because the team need the photos from the festival day prior by 11am the next morning.

Alas, 4 shots come swinging over my head and onto our table. The boys and I are astonished 😯. Women sending men drinks, in this day? This has to be a joke! We turn around and there we have @smarrttz and her friend casually laughing to themselves. Of course we had to return the favour… & that was the beginning of our friendship. One year on, and the conversation we began at Malta has brought forth rich rewards, for us both. Liv got one of the best shooters in the game to help her out with Photography and I got the opportunity to be apart of an amazing Netflix Doc!

BLACK STROKE IS OUT NOW LINK IN BIO!!!

There is a western trope that “black people don’t swim” and unfortunately the statistics don’t help that as 87% of black adults in the UK do not swim, this film explores why.

Below are a list of stupidly talented individuals that helped make this happen.
Every single one of them agreed to do the project based off a singular phone-call, no deck, no treatment, just vibes.

After finding out that 87% of Black adults in the UK don’t swim (Sport England), Olivia Smart (@smarrttz) decided she wanted to make a film looking further into this issue and follow three people from different walks of life as they learn to swim for the first time.

Olivia’s film ‘Black Stroke’ (@blackstrokefilm) was one of five short documentaries created by recipients of Netflix’s Documentary Talent Fund (@netflixuk). Filmmakers across UK and Ireland received £30,000 to create a documentary short film on the theme of ‘connection’.

All of this year’s Netflix Documentary Talent Fund films are now available to watch on Netflix’s Still Watching YouTube Channel.

Some welcome good news in amongst the industry chaos.

Proud to announce that BLACK STROKE is officially shortlisted for the Broadcast Digital Awards for Best Short Form Documentary.

There’s some brilliant films in the category so the competition is stiff but to be nominated amongst my industry peers is a huge achievement.

Big love to the entire BLACK STROKE family, we did that shit!🥹🥳

Four years ago today my now 16 year old cousin said to me “why do you make documentaries? nobody watches them, you should make programs people actually watch like Love Island.”

Yesterday I was on Sky News about a documentary over 11,000 people have watched. She text me and told me I “slayed” the interview and now that I’ve been on Sky News she better pass her GCSE’s so she doesn’t embarrass the family name.

Moral of the story: Ignore Gen Z, they don’t get it but they will.

Last week we released BLACK STROKE to the world and the outpouring of love from our communities has been more than I could have ever imagined🥹.
To every single person who has DMd me sharing their stories I feel honoured and moved so keep sharing I want to know about you!

Congrats to @wdment and @netflix on such a stunning event with such a brilliant turn out.

I want to take this time out to shout out the incredible team that made Black Stroke possible

We had a Black Editor, DOP, AD’s, Photographer, Sound Design, BTS Videographer, Exec, Assistant Producer, Runner, Line Producer, Poster Designer, Shooting Producer, Accountant and many more and I can’t begin to explain the energy on set.

We’re missing a few in the pics but check the credits if you want the 🔌.

So before the premier last week I headed to BBC Radio London to talk all things Black Stroke with @sunnyandshay and I’m not going to lie, I had such a great time the team were so welcoming and lovely!

We talked swimming, culture and take home messages from the film and it was so refreshing to talk to someone who related so closely with the themes of the film.
