Being embarrassed by your old self is not that embarrassing, right?

Caught up in Hamburg with my good friend @ruedigerglatz We’ve known each other for over three decades, and for the last 25 of those years he put a camera in my face whenever we’d meet.

Turns out this was useful.

Now I have a fairly comprehensive record of my style development, questionable fashion decisions and increasingly grey hair to go in the book.

Throwback to summer 2023, when we dropped our Montana BLACK Artist Edition #25 by SMASH137.
Therefore, we joined the Swiss stylewriter – and member of the former Montana Writer Team – on a short trip to Italy and filmed him sketching straight with the can onto the wall. Sketching, by the way, has always held a huge place in SMASH137’s artistic practice. And just like in that video with the can on the wall, his approach to sketching is the same: a direct line with marker on paper – no big construction lines, no room to correct. The styles come straight out of his hand onto the page, and they sit. Getting there took an enormous amount of practice – seemingly endless sketches on paper brought him to where he stands today.

Ich kann nicht behaupten, dass ich jemand bin, der sich seine eigenen Sachen gerne nochmal ansieht. Mein Interesse daran, wie das nächste wohl aussehen könnte, hilft dabei auch nicht wirklich.

Zu meiner eigenen Überraschung habe ich aber zumindest die Blackbooks sauber archiviert. Und jetzt, wo ich mich für das anstehende Buch Seite für Seite durcharbeiten muss, bin ich teilweise ganz schön überrascht.

Überrascht darüber, wie roh viele der Skizzen sind. Aber auch darüber, wie viele Ideen über die Jahre nur kurz angerissen wurden – und ich sie aus zeitlichen Gründen nie weiterverfolgt habe.

Gleichzeitig werde ich immer wieder mal gefragt, ob es nicht langweilig ist, sich über so lange Zeit nur mit diesem einen Schriftzug zu beschäftigen...

I can’t really claim to be someone who enjoys looking back at his own work. My curiosity about what the next piece might look like doesn’t help much either.

I was happy to discover, though, I’ve kept most of my blackbooks properly archived. And now that I work through them page by page for the upcoming book, I’m genuinely surprised at times.

Surprised by how raw a lot of the sketches are. But also by how many ideas over the years were only briefly touched on and never followed through, simply for lack of time.

At the same time, people keep asking me if it isn’t boring to spend so many years working on the same lettering...

Work in progress… almost 1.000 sketches scanned - and now comes the hard part: the selection. That means cutting ¾ of them. 😢 Not an easy job when you see the quality of these pages.
