What if women had been given the same opportunities, resources, and encouragement as men throughout the history of sports?
In this clip from Swell Season Surf Radio, host Tyler Breuer and author Bonnie Tsui explore how generations of inequality in sports have shaped our understanding of women’s physical capabilities.
Drawing from her book On Muscle: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters, Bonnie challenges long-held assumptions about female strength and examines how scientific research, cultural expectations, and unequal opportunities have limited our understanding of what women can achieve.
As research continues to reveal more about women’s bodies and athletic potential, one thing becomes increasingly clear: We may have only scratched the surface of what women are capable of. @bonnietsui8 #swellseasonsurfradio #surfpodcast #bonnietsui #nysurfing #onmuscle by @smashsurf

What if building muscle wasn’t about looking stronger, but about living longer and staying healthier?
In this clip from Swell Season Surf podcast , Bonnie Tsui explores one of the most surprising discoveries from her book, On Muscle: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters: muscle isn’t just for athletic performance or appearance. It’s a vital resource our bodies rely on during illness, injury, and aging.
Bonnie shares a personal story about her mother’s battle with an autoimmune condition and a doctor’s unexpected advice: “You need more muscle.” The experience changed how she understood the importance of maintaining muscle mass, particularly as we age.
From the gradual loss of muscle beginning in our 30s to the benefits of strength training for long-term health, Bonnie makes a compelling case for rethinking our relationship with exercise.
Building muscle isn’t just about lifting more weight. It’s about staying healthy enough to keep doing the things we love. #swellseasonsurfradio #surfpodcast #onmuscle #surfing #nysurfing by @smashsurf

What does it really mean to be strong? Is strength simply a measure of physical power, or is there something deeper connecting our muscles to our identity, resilience, and the way we experience the world?
On this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio, host Tyler Breuer welcomes back acclaimed author, journalist, and fellow surfer Bonnie Tsui to discuss her latest book, On Muscle: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters.
Recorded at Rockefeller Center, the conversation begins with a trip down memory lane to their shared days at Blue Magazine before diving into Bonnie’s fascinating exploration of muscle—part science, part cultural history, and part personal journey.
From the surprising science of muscle memory and the relationship between strength and longevity to the cultural expectations surrounding gender, beauty, and athletic performance, Bonnie challenges us to reconsider what our muscles do for us and what they reveal about who we are.
Along the way, they explore Eastern and Western philosophies of strength, the remarkable connection between muscle and brain health, adaptive yoga, aging, and the evolving conversation around fairness and inclusion in sports.
It’s a thoughtful, wide-ranging discussion about the bodies we inhabit, the limits we place on them, and the extraordinary ways they adapt.

Cycling and surfing along 8,000km of the Atlantic coastline wasn’t part of Laura Wilson and Ben Herrgott’s original plans. But at a time when global events felt a little overwhelming and deflating, this seemed like a refreshing way to live, to move with intention and to embrace everything around them as they travelled through France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, The Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and The Gambia. With a camera each and a microphone, they attempted to record what moved them: the wisdom of other cultures and customs, traditional music, and life in the desert and along faraway shores. What they discovered was far more energizing than they could have ever imagined.

Directed by Ben Haggot and Laura Wilson

The speakers recall early North Shore surf culture before digital cameras and widespread video, when photos were mailed out for processing and returned weeks later as slides. Divine would select the best shots and host crowded slideshows at their house or a sponsor’s venue, giving surfers their first look at moments like big Pipeline waves. They describe the electric vibe and how Jeff—often seen as shy—ran the projector, heckled, and “held court” while showing sequences. One slideshow turned into a chaotic community meal when a grill mishap left hungry surfers piling onto free swordfish, leaving some at the end with little more than salad. They reflect that the delayed reveal created anticipation and that these gatherings strengthened community, making people in the lineup treat each other more like partners than enemies. @stevehawk6211 @jeffdivinephotographer @surfer_magazine #swellseasonsurfradio #surfpodcast #surfer #surfermagazine #surfpodcast by @smashsurf

Steve Hawk describes a lifelong interest in nuclear bombs rooted in his father’s World War II experience, and how, while working at Stanford, he became interested in darker parts of the internet. Living near the exposed coast between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, he surfs in isolated, intimidating conditions and decided to bring these worlds together in a book that includes surf material and isn’t only about terrorism. The conversation contrasts the uncontrollable ocean with tech culture’s desire to control everything, arguing that surfing teaches adaptation, presence, and responding to what’s in front of you. They also discuss how the story’s ending criticizes the system—identified as unfettered capitalism—for enabling ultra-wealthy, unregulated power, with Epstein cited as an example, and propose regulated capitalism under competent, caring democratic leadership. #swellseasonsurfradio #surfing #surfpodcast #surfer #stevehawk @stevehawk6211 @rockefellercenter by @smashsurf

In this episode, the hosts revisit Joel Tudor’s claim that he was originally set to receive a Surfer magazine cover until an advertiser allegedly objected to featuring a non-mainstream, non-sponsored longboarder, resulting in a split cover with Luke Egan and the blurb “Can’t we all just get along?” The guest says he was unaware of any advertiser influence and insists no one would have approached him with such a request, suggesting the real internal debate was whether a shortboard-focused magazine should put a longboarder on the cover. He recalls the split cover stemming from a planned story about the longboard-versus-shortboard conflict—likely written by Sam George—who rode both and pitched the broader concept, making the split a way to include a longboarder without it being only a longboard cover. @stevehawk6211 @surfer_magazine @lukeegan @joeljitsu #surfermagazine #joeltudor #longboard #swellseason by @smashsurf

Steve Hawk recounts a prank from the post-Nick era involving a fraternity-style “donut” gag while staying at Surfer crew housing on the North Shore. Someone delivered a box of seemingly fresh donuts after a party with the Roxy team, and the crew ate them—only to receive Polaroids hours later showing the donuts had been placed in pranksters’ ass cracks before being returned to the box. The story includes how the prank was later featured in a magazine, prompting one speaker to write a rebuttal that mocked the publication’s “gnarly” cover blurbs and excessive exclamation points, while noting no one got sick and questioning the pranksters’ cleanup situation. @stevehawk6211 @jamiebrisick @rockefellercenter @pilgrimsurfsupply #swellseasonsurfradio #stevehawk #nearshore #surfing #surfer @surfer_magazine by @smashsurf

side the Surfer vs. Surfing Magazine Rivalry with Nick Carroll
The speaker recalls the intense rivalry between Surfer and Surfing Magazine during his tenure at Surfer, often measuring himself against Nick Carroll, whom he calls one of the best surf journalists from Australia and a strong surfer as well. He praises Surfing’s staff, including Dave Gilovich and Bill Sharp, and contrasts photographers Flame—described as fiercely competitive and controlling on shoots—with the more easygoing Jeff Divine, noting their work on projects like Cortez Bank. Feeling like an above-average surfer compared to Carroll’s competitive background, the speaker focused on out-reporting him and differentiating Surfer’s deeper reporting—such as sending Bruce Jenkins to Cabo to interview Pat Curren—while Surfing targeted a slightly younger audience with lighter coverage. He concludes that Surfing’s quality kept him up at night. @nicholasgeorgecarroll @stevehawk6211 @davegilovich @sharpxxl @surfer_magazine #surfermagazine #surfingmagazine #surfing #surfer by @smashsurf
