An ottoman made for the “With Limitations” exhibition by @designeverything_org on view at @aramgalleryldn.

This work investigates access as a material in itself, an invisible infrastructure of making where limitations of space and machinery impact every decision, revealing that accessibility to making is not determined by your environment, but sustained by a larger community of built relationships.

Seemingly forever in constant motion, being an ‘emerging designer’ feels like this tug back and forth between various locations, being both the hunter and gatherer and returning each time with your prized bounty. By not having a fixed space to continually return to, sizes of components are dictated by what can be carried on public transport or in the back of your mate’s Peugeot, while the actual time you have in a workshop becomes a carefully choreographed sequence of actions.

So far, I’ve come to recognise that the limitations of making lie within your access. Access to space and time, but more surprisingly, although just as importantly, people. Access relies on your ability to create a network of connections to those who can enable your accessibility to the things you need.

This work is about access and support, embracing the community of people I have the privilege to find myself around. These introductions to the industry that we all find ourselves trying to claw into may lie in helping those around you, championing your friends, and borrowing space and time from one another for the price of a pint or two.

It’s about building a network, utilising every moment, and embracing the uncertainty of it all. This work reflects on how relationships and shared resources become the unseen framework that allows making to happen.
