This past weekend, with seconds left on the clock, I found myself in bottom turtle. Technically, a Granby roll was available, but instead of initiating a scrabble that could be stifled or countered, I stayed composed, shut down the hooks, defended the choke, and let the clock work in my favor.

This is the idea of being tactical versus being technical. Technical mastery is the refinement of each movement…recognizing your opponent’s commitments and countering with precise timing. Tactical awareness, however, is seeing the larger picture. Knowing when to press, when to remain patient, and when efficiency outweighs unnecessary movement.

If I only had one choice, I’d take tactical awareness over technical ability every time.

But make no mistake… all the top jiu jitsu athletes in the world possess a high degree of both.

What would you pick? ⬇️
