Went in for a brighter smile and left with a whole dental update 😭🦷✨ I visited SmileSpace Harlem, a Black-owned dental practice, to get my teeth whitened and the experience was so smooth from start to finish. My smile is looking brighter already 🤍 BUT during my visit, I also found out I may need a root canal 😩 — definitely wasn’t expecting that, but I’m glad they caught the issue so I can take care of it before it gets worse! Happy 6th anniversary, SmileSpace!🎉 In December 2019, I signed the lease for what would become SmileSpace. A few months later, the world shut down. I was locked into a lease, facing delays at every turn, and building a business in the middle of a pandemic, with no clear sense of when or whether we’d open. On October 12, 2020, we opened our doors. Six years later, I’m still in awe of what this has become. We started as a team of 2 @dental_consultantnyc . Today we’re a team of 35; 7 associate doctors, 9 hygienists, and many clinical and admin staff members. We serve our communities in Clinton Hill and Harlem, and Boerum Hill opens in just a few months. The impact we’ve had on the people we serve has been bigger than anything I imagined on that first day. SmileSpace is proof that the odds can be stacked against you and you can still come out on the other side, if you keep your faith and keep going. Being a CEO is hard. Every day brings challenges, wins, and losses. But it is so rewarding. And I get to do it alongside an incredible team of good-hearted people. What more could I ask for? After nearly three months on hold because the building’s condo board wouldn’t allow us to core drill through the floor, I’m happy to say we’re finally BACK ON TRACK with @smilespacenyc Boerum Hill. 🙏🏾 This entire process has really tested me but also allowed me to reflect on my journey. Someone once told me they thought I came from a life of privilege, and honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Growing up the way I did taught me resilience — how to get knocked down, get back up, and keep pushing. When your vision for your life is clear, only God can stop you. Social media often shows the wins, but rarely the struggle. I’ll always choose to be candid about both. Things aren’t always easy. 1. Representation matters. Nothing more to be said. 📷: @moments_by_middleton1 2. Some of our SmileSpace doctors showed up and did great work for the community at the Harlem Love Day 2026. 3. Dr. Lee Gause, a literal legend in dentistry, invited me to speak to families at the Harlem Boys and Girls Club. 📷: @moments_by_middleton1 4. My assistant said, “Dr. Black, my son doesn’t want to leave without getting a picture with you.” Made my day 🖤. You never know who’s paying attention to you. 5. Our team with Billy Council, one of the coordinators of the Love Day. I met @billycouncilharlem a few weeks ago at a Steve Madden event hosted by @ameenhalee @sweetmalika and discovered that the annual Love Day coincidentally happens on the same street as @smilespacenyc ! We had to participate and will continue to in the future. 6. There is hope for the next generation. These were some of the smartest kids I’ve ever met. They asked advanced questions about dentistry. Even their parents had great questions. 📷: @moments_by_middleton1 7. Happy to have our @smilespacenyc logo up there with these giants. 8. We did free dental exams, panoramic X-rays, blood pressure checks, and gave out goodie bags. Our doors were wide open to the community. One guy came in with an extremely elevated blood pressure. He was uninformed that sodium intake is a major contributor and hadn’t started his meds. I told him to talk to start the meds asap, educated him about diet, and told him to follow up with his PCP asap. He was shocked that I was the owner and continuously praised me for the work we’re doing. This is why representation matters. That’s my Dr. Black and I’m sticking by him! You know why? Because coming to @smilespacenyc In HARLEM was the best decision I’ve made! We started with the removal of my root canal after it popped off eating crab Rangoon in Boston right after I had hit the stage. I was devastated thinking of how much it would cost me. I know I would now need a tooth 🦷 implant but I didn’t have 7k that I was quoted somewhere else and that’s when I found DR. BLACK ! Smile space takes private insurance and pointed me in the right direction . Past few months I’ve had deep cleanings , regular scheduled cleanings, a gum graph and now I’m healed enough to start my @invisalign Journey ! In just 6 months I’ll have them chompers and gaps gone! Can’t wait to see the full million dollar smile! Thank you @smilespacenyc @dr.cblack by @smilespacenyc
