Mentawais Terima Kasih !

This is it our team trip to Indonesia has come to an end.

While we look behind and see a week full of fun, training and great waves, unfortunately we did not get the occasions we would have loved to meet and engage more with the local community, understand the culture, challenges…
One thing for sure, Mentawais look for now still preserved from mass tourism and its impact and we can only hope it remains as such.

Thanks to @louilousea, a surf guide in the area, we have been able to get in contact with a young local surfer, @shaldiraa_ , whose ambitions are clearly to become one of the top surfer of her country. 🇮🇩.
Shaldira will be supported by Smile Wave Fund in the coming year and we hope we can help her reach her ambitions.

Our way to leave a positive footprint after our visit to Indonesia. Welcome to the team @shaldiraa_ @aweraresort taken in Tua Pejat Kepulauan Mentawai by @smilewavefund

People often ask us why we think we should all reduce our fish consumption, and the answer is quite simple:

90 to 95 million tons of fish are caught every year.

25% are caught illegally.

60% are caught as a bycatch and thrown overboard.

A mere 15% of the fish caught around the world has been fished legally and sustainably.

We can not rely on so called sustainable fishing labels as they are directly financed by the fishing industry itself.

Except when buying seafood directly from small, local fisheries, we have almost no way of knowing if the seafood we consume has been caught in a sustainable way, in fact there is an 85% chance it has not.

Consuming seafood the way we do therefore has an 85% chance of profiting large industrial, non-sustainable fishing companies and/or criminal organisations. Those same organisations and companies which steal the fish from local, small scale fisheries. by @smilewavefund

A couple of days left before the team gets back to real life!

The Mentawai islands are definitely a very special place and although Indonesia faces political and environmental issues, it seems like the islands are somehow preserved, at least for now.

The surf has been good and our team riders are getting ready for their contest seasons. 🇮🇩 by @smilewavefund

Do you know @surfersnotstreetchildren ? Today, we would like to re-introduce an amazing organization dedicated to empowering street children in South Africa and Mozambique through surfing and mentorship.

Founded by @tomhewittmbe, this incredible initiative combines surfing, mentorship, and care to transform the lives of vulnerable children, helping them build confidence, resilience, and a brighter future. They identify children at risk of street connectedness and empower them to leave street life and reintegrate into society successfully. They offer safe play, a healing space, developmental programs engaging children and youth through the power of surfing, to help develop children and youth into independent and self-sustaining adults and to advocate for the way society perceives.

Discover more about Surfers Not Street Children’s impactful work and how you can support their mission the link in bio.

Nā Kama Kai, which means “children of the sea,” was founded in 2008 by professional surfer @duanedesoto. Inspired by the profound gift he received from his upbringing at Mākaha Beach, DeSoto aimed to recreate that experience for the communities of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. He envisioned a safe environment where children from Hawaiʻi and around the world could connect with and learn about the ocean.

@nakamakai is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching kids ocean safety, conservation, and stewardship. By sharing ‘ōiwi (native) knowledge, they strive to strengthen communities and connection to the ocean.

To complement the organisations we support in this region, which has a heavy colonial past and very difficult socio-economic context, we have chosen to support Na Kama Kai because while offering a cultural identity to the youth, it also raises awareness about environmental issues and the preservation of what is for them the most beautiful playground, the ocean. To learn more about how you can support them, reach out and let’s chat.

What about Swiss-based initiatives? Provide the Slide is a Swiss NGO that opens new perspectives for young people on the West African coast with surf equipment.

After spending a great time there and surfing great waves, Simon and Christopher gave their boards to some kids before leaving back home. However, they couldn’t forget all the young people who can’t afford surfboards themselves. Their core competence is collecting and sending the surfboards. They breathe new life into boards and combine empowerment through sustainable surfing.
The image dates from their project in Sao Tome in collaboration with SOMA after a big collection-drive in spain and a trip from switzerland to Lisbon in 2023 80 surfboards.

Discover more about impactful work and how you can support their mission on our website and theirs.
