At #SmithCollege’s SURF program, student researchers are studying how neural circuits reconnect during regeneration. By using advanced biosensors like GCaMP8m and iGluSnFR, they can watch live neurons flash as chemical signals cross synapses in real time. The big question: do neural networks rewire the exact same way after damage, or do synapses start working before full nerve bridges are even built? Understanding these early steps of cellular recovery could transform how we approach physical therapy and medicine for paralysis in humans. by @smithcollege

The ripple effect of a #SmithCollege education spans decades, continents, and generations. Years ago, a young woman attending Ewha Womans University in postwar Seoul took a class from a Smith graduate. The instructor's brilliance and global perspective left such a profound mark that the student made a promise to herself: if she ever made it to America, her daughters would go to Smith College. That daughter, Suzanne, did indeed graduate from Smith, and the legacy continued when her own daughter, Tatiana Galli, graduated in 2019.

For years, the identity of the mystery instructor remained unknown, until a chance conversation at our 2018 Women of Color Conference led to some digital detective work that identified her as Ok Che Chon Ashwin '56. Following Mrs. Ashwin's incredible journey all the way from Australia for her 70th Reunion this past May, she and Suzanne finally connected in New York City in June. It was a beautiful, full-circle moment allowing Suzanne to thank her in person for a cross-continental spark that didn't just last a lifetime, but shaped generations—a testament to the power of our global network and the lifelong influence of a single Smithie.

Through a generous endowment honoring #SmithCollege alum Muriel Kohn Pokross ’34, the Botanic Garden of Smith College sends two students each year to the world-renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London. This summer, Beatrice Tauer ’27, a biological sciences and statistical & data sciences double major, landed one of these spots. Working with specimens dating back to the 1800s, Beatrice is combining molecular biology and statistics to study Macaranga plant species endemic to Madagascar. "The ability to pursue research at Smith gave me a great perspective for how to approach a new research project," she says, reflecting on how her time in the lab and the classroom prepared her for the opportunity of a lifetime.

For #SmithCollege Assistant Professor of Government Cheng Xu, scholarly inquiry and lived experience are deeply intertwined. As he puts it, “so much of what we research, what we choose to look at, is informed by our life experiences.” Before entering academia, Xu spent nearly a decade serving as an infantry officer and paratrooper in the Canadian Army. This background directly shapes his research on civil wars, insurgencies, and the complex dynamics of local peacebuilding.

Launched under the high patronage of the President of the French Republic, the Lafayette Fellowship is led by Villa Albertine, within the French Embassy in the United States, in partnership with France Science and Albertine Foundation.
