I was honestly embarrassed looking at this before picture.

For the last year and a half, I haven’t been out in public nearly as much as I used to. What most people didn’t see was what was happening behind the scenes.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid. For me, it absolutely wrecked my energy, metabolism and mood. I gained an insane amount of weight, could sleep for hours and still be exhausted, had almost no motivation, and eventually even simple everyday activities became difficult.

The picture on the left says a lot.

I was sitting on the bed of my truck watching my kids play at the playground while Taylor walked around the track with our baby strapped to her.

I wanted to be out there with them. I physically felt like I couldn’t.

At that point, I genuinely felt like I was dying.

My blood pressure was extremely high. My sleep apnea was severe. My psoriasis was getting worse. My A1C was right at the diabetes threshold. My resting heart rate could sit around 90–100 BPM while doing absolutely nothing. I was sleeping constantly and watching life happen from the sidelines.

Now look at the picture on the right.

Over 100 pounds gone.

But I’m even more proud of what happened INSIDE my body.

My blood pressure is consistently normal. My A1C has improved enough that I’m no longer considered prediabetic. My resting heart rate has dropped dramatically. I have energy again. I’m exercising, walking and actually participating in my life.

I still have Hashimoto’s. I didn’t magically cure it. I got treatment, changed my habits, improved my nutrition, became more active, prioritized sleep and started paying attention to what my health data was telling
I’m not finished.

Still tracking. Still learning. Still rebuilding.

And 😂 I wasn’t actually mad in the before picture. Taylor was taking my picture, so I made a face at her. Apparently I committed to the role. by @smithgevity

🫀 YOUR HEART TELLS A STORY. ARE YOU TRACKING IT?

One of the most valuable health metrics I’ve learned about through wearable technology is Heart Rate Variability (HRV).

HRV measures the variation in time between your heartbeats. It can provide valuable insight into how your body is responding to stress, exercise, sleep, illness, and recovery.

📊 Why does HRV matter?

Your HRV can help you better understand:

✅ How well your body is recovering

✅ How physical and mental stress affect you

✅ How sleep impacts your nervous system

✅ When your body may need additional rest

✅ How your overall recovery changes over time

⌚ The power of wearable technology

Devices like WHOOP, Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Watch, and Amazfit make it easier than ever to monitor HRV and recognize patterns.

But here’s something important I’ve learned:

It’s not about having the highest HRV. It’s about understanding YOUR baseline.

A single low reading doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. However, consistent changes in your HRV, especially alongside changes in resting heart rate, sleep, and how you feel, can provide valuable clues about what’s happening inside your body.

📈 Track the trends. Understand the patterns. Make informed decisions.

Wearable technology isn’t about chasing perfect numbers. It’s about learning how your body responds to everyday life and using that knowledge to build healthier habits.

Your data becomes more valuable when you understand what it’s telling you.

Aligned by Kristen Holmes, PhD might actually be the first book I ever sit down and read all the way through — and if you know me, that’s saying something. 😂

Kristen is the Global Head of Human Performance and Principal Scientist at WHOOP, a company that has genuinely played a huge role in changing my life. WHOOP helped me stop looking at my health as just a number on a scale and start understanding my sleep, recovery, stress, HRV, and what my body is actually telling me.

I’ve also listened to Kristen on countless podcasts, and every time I hear her speak about human performance, health, and longevity, I walk away motivated to keep improving.

Considering the journey I’ve been on and how much WHOOP has been a part of it, I couldn’t think of a better book to start with. @drkristenholmes by @smithgevity
