What I enjoy the most about the yachting industry isn’t the boats — it’s the people behind them. Every conversation teaches something different. Every expert brings a new perspective. Every connection has its own rhythm and its own value. Speaking with designers, captains, brokers, engineers, builders and even newcomers who are just stepping into this world made me realize something essential: Authenticity is the real advantage. People feel when you’re genuinely curious. People open up when you listen instead of trying to impress. And in a niche like ours, trust is built slowly, one meaningful interaction at a time. My strategy is becoming clearer each day: Move with patience. Respect timing. And connect with intention — not noise. I’m learning a lot on this journey, and I’m grateful for everyone who has taken the time to share insights with me so far. This is only the beginning. More conversations. More learning. When someone tells me they want to buy a yacht, the first thing that I don’t ask is the size or the brand. I ask how they actually plan to use it. Because a yacht only makes sense when it matches your life, not your imagination. If your idea is long crossings, autonomy, spending days at sea, then stability, range, and structure matter far more than speed. That’s a very different boat than someone who wants quick coastal trips, weekends, or moving fast between destinations. Same thing with life on board. If you want to host friends, entertain, live socially on the yacht, So space, layout, and flow become critical. If you plan to live on board for long periods, Ceiling height, storage, galley setup, air conditioning I mean things people overlook it starts to matter a lot. And then there’s the part most buyers discover too late: logistics. Will the yacht actually fit in your marina? Can you access the areas you want to cruise? Are parts and technicians available where you plan to use it? A beautiful yacht that’s hard to maintain Even the financial structure depends on how you plan to use it. New or pre-owned. Private or commercial. Flag, taxes, warranties. There’s no universal “good yacht.” There’s only a yacht that fits how you plan to use it. My role is to help people slow that conversation down, so the yacht works for their life and not the other way around. That’s usually where a good decision starts. by @smithliife
