Film Screening with Salman AlNajem: The Animatrix
What happens when the world you understand suddenly stops behaving according to its own rules?
As part of the public programme accompanying Meaningful/less – لزوم ما لا يلزم, join artist Salman AlNajem for a screening and discussion of selected episodes from The Animatrix.
Released in 2003, The Animatrix is an anthology of nine animated short films expanding the universe of The Matrix. Across radically different stories and visual styles, the films explore consciousness, technology, reality, freedom and what it means to be human.
For this screening, Salman selects episodes that resonate with the questions running through Meaningful/less, using each film as a starting point for conversation around reality, agency, existence and our attempts to make sense of the worlds we inhabit.

For those asking if I’ll ever make happy paintings, here’s to ya 💝

An Ode to Joy is a collection of melted crayon paintings on paper. It is a celebration, a light at the end of the tunnel. Severing as a reminder of simple optimism; that despite all the hardships one may face in this lifetime. When love is found and focused on, it makes everything else worth while

Sketching Sunday workshop at @biennale_sa went very well.
Was very nice seeing the participants smiling, sketching and also transcribing some of my philosophy one-liners.
Some asked me to give the sketches I made during the workshop, which was flattering. Thank you to all involved 💛 taken in Diriyah Jax Riyadh by @smnajem

An Ode to Joy (2026)

hadesisgood is more personal off-shoot from my painting practice. An ongoing project that started in 2013 in Paris when I got my first moleskin notebook. The project started with me carrying the notebook everywhere to jot down ideas, thoughts & schedules as a way to offload my mind.

Now the project is 60+ personal journal sketchbooks filled with a collection of thousands of stream of consciousness line drawings. I found myself practising ‘Automatic drawing’ a well acclaimed psychotherapeutic exercise. Which warranted me a strong connection with my subconscious mind; and at times would lead me into venturing into what Carl Jung called: the collective-unconscious. To revel, record & reveal a familiar dreamscape that we are all connected to; that many of us visit.

These sketchbook drawings are then transformed into melted crayon paintings. A process I developed after seeing Fayum mummy portraits at the Louvre Abu Dhabi (wax and pigment painted portraits on wooden boards attached to mummies from Roman Egypt.) I was attracted to the unique texture of the mummy-portraits, and thought “pigment + wax = crayon”, and thats when I decided to melt crayon in a tea cup, on a hot-pot, and paint the hot, non-toxic liquid with a paintbrush. taken in Bahrain National Museum by @smnajem
