Corn grown in East London.

Not baby corn. Not Silver Queen. Rather a city hybrid that still tasted of home.

My husband is from Carteret County, and I have watched him try to grow corn almost everywhere we have lived. Different gardens, different climates, and varying amounts of optimism. Last summer, in East London, it proper worked.

The ears were small, but not miniature. Tender enough to steam whole, cut through and eat right down to the core. Sweet, but more so corn silk fresh, funny-sized and completely memorable.

North Carolina knows corn differently. Silver Queen, Ambrosia, Bodacious, roadside stands, summer pots, corn coolers, heaps of butter, salt, the kind of sweetness people gossip about. This was not that corn, exactly. It was East London corn, grown in a small city garden, carrying a little memory of somewhere else.

Somehow, this funny little East London corn became one of the best things we ate all summer.

Have you ever grown something because you missed the taste of home?

Pastéis de nata from Belém, Lisbon.

The story begins in the 1830s. After Portugal’s monasteries were closed and their kitchens dispersed, a custard tart recipe from that world found its way into the neighbourhood. By 1837, Pastéis de Belém was selling them nearby.

Nearly two centuries later, that small tart has become one of Lisbon’s great food rituals.

Pastéis de nata are all contrast: shattering pastry, warm custard, scorched top, soft centre and a little wobble.

One reason a pastel de nata feels like it would perfectly at home in Carteret County is it’s glorious texture. That rich, creamy middle. The softness. The sweetness. The crispness.

There is a whole world of Southern sweets that understands this: pies, puddings, trifles, cold cakes, lemon things, cream things, anything that benefits from a spoon, a fork, a fridge or a second helping.

Some places love crunch.
Some places love smoke.
Some places love syrup.
Some places understand custard.

Are you a crisp-dessert person, or a soft-centred, custard-pie-pudding person?

Food gathers people, place, sea, land and memory.

That belief is where Smoke Point Partners begins.

Our work is built around one central belief: good food work should honour the whole system.

The growers, fishers, farmers, bakers, producers and artisans who bring food into being.

The restaurants, markets and hospitality teams who shape it into experience.

The people who gather around it, return to it, talk about it and carry it forward.

Smoke Point Partners brings together a life in food shaped across continents, coastlines and market towns, now rooted in Carteret County. We are a food consultancy based in Morehead City, North Carolina, working across restaurants, hospitality, food businesses, markets, storytelling, operations, food insecurity and commercial growth.

We are also building Pop Vesta Markets and Events: our community-facing work developing markets, stalls, dinner series and public gatherings that create joy, belonging and more reasons for people to come together.

This channel is where we both think and dream out loud about food.

The meals that stay with us.
The markets that united communities.
The ingredients that tell a place’s history.
The restaurants, growers, makers and food people we admire.
The food culture taking shape across Carteret County and coastal North Carolina.

We are here to listen, learn, build, contribute and celebrate what food can do when it is rooted in place.

Welcome to Smoke Point.
