We can go out saying we had Aaron Chen and his lovely wife Esther (who we think might be the funnier one) visit SF! Not one for celebrity hunting but Aaron Chen has been played and laughed at so many times in our house it was very cool for us. The stars aligned and we finally got to meet him. Thank you to @emmanuelphotakis @sonsoffuzz01 @drewluo for helping us put on this event. These legends have been cooking up a way to introduce new people to SF and we can’t thank them enough 💙 We are grateful that they have seen what we are about and have come on the ride with us. Ocky on music after 15 years of not hearing him play was perfect for the day, Mango and literally a pasta pot serving yummy as food helped us chill out and laugh during a crazy session of dishes and no space, and @drewluo coming in with a ridiculous choc pie for us all before he goes on hiatus for a while (this guy has gone above and beyond the past year dropping off a range of off tap tarts for us to sell and help us grow 😭) Big thanks to all vendors who came did their thing helping us create a nice place for people to come, and the big SF team who held it down (although Tom left at the worst time). by @smokingfishstudio

Empire doesn’t disappear. It changes its branding. SF's current research explores how ideas of value, taste, ownership and aspiration are shaped long after formal empire has ended. Grounded in the history of French occupation in Vietnam, the work examines how power is now exercised through luxury branding, intellectual property, global manufacturing and consumer culture. Louis Vuitton and IKEA sit at opposite ends of the market, one built on exclusivity, the other on accessible design, yet both have become global authorities on what is considered desirable, exporting European ideals of taste around the world. In Vietnam, the Louis Vuitton monogram exists far beyond the luxury boutique. It appears in wet markets, roadside stalls and everyday clothing, where counterfeit versions make the brand available across class and income. Rather than diminishing the logo, this widespread circulation challenges the exclusivity on which its value depends. Louis Vuitton has responded by aggressively protecting its trademarks, pursuing counterfeit production and, more recently, taking legal action against companies such as Molly Tea over the use of a floral motif that many argue predates the brand itself. These disputes reveal that luxury is sustained not only through craftsmanship, but through controlling who can use its symbols and what they are permitted to represent. Working within contemporary art and design, I am similarly confronted by the ongoing elevation of Scandinavian design and minimalism as universal markers of good taste. Like luxury branding, these aesthetic ideals are often presented as neutral or timeless, when they are in fact culturally constructed and reinforced through institutions, education and global markets. Rather than accepting these hierarchies, the work asks how they are inherited, maintained and challenged through the objects we live with every day. by @smokingfishstudio
