Friday night I got to see myself projected onto the enormous old airplane hangars at historic Floyd Bennett Field, NYC’s first municipal airport, as part of Wills @glasspiegel’s incredible film about Wiley Post, the barnstorming, eye-patched daredevil pilot who was the first to fly first duo & then solo around the world in the early 1930s! ✈️🌎🪊🏴‍☠️ Part of an art show sponsored by @jbrpc. Check out Wills and his other large scale building projections! taken in Floyd Bennett Airfield by @smoota

“The Legend of Wiley Post” (wide-format experimental film combining digital footage, hand-drawn animation, 3D animation, Pathé newsreels, and modular video synthesis) premiered recently on the façades of twin airport hangars at Floyd Bennett Field, New York City’s first airport, located on Jamaica Bay at the end of Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn.

Legendary pilot Wiley Post flew around the world from Floyd Bennett Field in the 1930s, setting world records and inspiring the masses. In our film and a subsequent live performance, the newfangled ensemble, The Wiley Post Dance Band, carries on Wiley’s experimental legacy, bringing his story back to life on the same New York runways where Wiley once flew and landed.

Credits

Dance by Erin Kilmurray
Cinematography, animation, and editing by Wills Glasspiegel
Music by Wills, Smoota, and DJ Manny
Additional animation by Joey Morello
Sound mix by Michael Beharie
Produced by Glass Pictures
Drone documentation by Tiago Arismendy

“The Legend of Wiley Post” was commissioned by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy in partnership with the National Park Service for the Floyd Bennett Field! Public Arts Festival, 2026. taken in Floyd Bennett Airfield by @smoota
