A democratic socialist ran for mayor of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia — and received the most votes out of five candidates in the first round of the election.

I put this story together for the @moreperfectuniversity Summer Story competition using some of the footage I gathered while filming for the @timdenson4ath campaign! Huge thanks to More Perfect University for the opportunity, and to Tim for the interview. taken in Athens, Georgia by @smorganframes

When a student short film starts gaining traction online, it can feel like an overnight success. But for filmmaker Sam Morgan @sam.morgan05 , the response to "I Love You, Bro" is the result of years spent experimenting, learning, and steadily refining his voice. What began with stop-motion videos made from toys evolved into a growing body of work, shaped by school productions, online uploads, and a deep curiosity about the film industry itself.

This piece looks at the journey behind the film’s viral moment, and what resonates about its story of male friendship and emotional vulnerability. As "I Love You, Bro" finds its audience, it is not just the view count that stands out, but the conversations it sparks. The article reflects on the quiet persistence behind creative work, and how even a nine-minute student film can connect with viewers in lasting, unexpected ways.

“Young or old, when you wake to news of bombs falling, genocide, and rising fascism—you’ll want to crawl back under the covers. That’s the point. They’d gladly keep you there, in the dark, while they profit from your silence. Throw the covers off. Shine a bright light. Let your voice be heard.“ — Lawrence Nault taken in University of Georgia by @smorganframes

Principal photography for “Death, Love, & Birthdays,” my debut feature film, has wrapped! While reshoots, ADR, and months of editing still lie ahead, I can’t help but feel a tremendous sense of gratitude and accomplishment.

To my friends and family: thank you so much  for your support of my work and passion. I’d like to specifically thank my parents, sister, and grandparents.

To Chanelle: thank you for being the world’s best girlfriend, my favorite person to talk to about this movie, my primary source of emotional support, and a naturally incredible Assistant Director. I couldn’t have made it through this shoot without you.

To Mandy: thank you for accepting the AD role for one last Picture’s Up project before college — we’ve come a long way since 8th grade.

To Tate: thank you for your constant dedication to your performance and the film as a whole — I couldn’t have asked for a better lead actor.

To Brooke: thank you for doing such a perfect job bringing the character of Isabelle off of the page and onto the screen— there’s a reason that she was written with you in mind.

To Logan: thank you for stepping in and working around your busy schedule to play Ezra — it’s been an immense pleasure implementing your own traits and ideas to create a character much greater than my original vision.

To Stephanie: thank you for your amazing performance as Rachel, as well as the energy you bring with you to set — this cast would be far from complete without you.

And finally, to Mary: thank you for sparking my love of the arts when I was 11 years old and for continuing to inspire as I approach 20 — it has been a deeply surreal and rewarding experience to direct the first person who ever directed me.

To all cast, crew, donors, and volunteers not specifically mentioned above: every one of you played a part in making this production a consistently positive experience for all involved.

As we enter the post-production stage, I will continue sharing frequent updates regarding the process. I’ll be working tirelessly in the coming months to ensure that, before long, I have a great movie to share with all of you.

I started Picture’s Up in November of 2020 with the intent to mostly post movie reviews. Over its first year, it transformed into a platform for sharing my films and the stories behind them as a means of illuminating the filmmaking process as a high schooler on a shoestring budget. Now, as I graduate from the chapter of life that defined Picture’s Up from the start, I look back on those 1,295 days with fondness.

This June, we begin production on our first ever feature film. We hope to make this our best project yet, building upon our knowledge from the last four years spent making movies. It’s a film I wrote from a very personal place in hopes of creating a work of art that’s universal in appeal. I can’t wait for you to see it.

Thank you to those who have made Picture’s Up Productions what it is so far, as well as those currently working to make it what it will be. I promise I’ll make you proud. by @smorganframes
