Inscriptive Practices Visiting Professor Perry Kulper week at Manchester School of Architecture | Day Four

Our gratitude to Professors Mark Smout and Laura Allen @smoutallen from the Bartlett School of Architecture for joining us for the fourth day of Inscriptive Practices Visiting Professor Perry Kulper @pkulper week, sharing their work and approaches to architectural imagination, drawing and modelling.

From Architecture and Landscape Imaginaries to Restless Drawings and Playable Models, the sessions explored changing landscapes, speculative environments and experimental approaches to representation, opening up conversations around drawing and modelling as tools for inquiry, play and architectural exploration.

A special thank you to NoSH Atelier @nonstandardhabitats for generously hosting us throughout the day and providing a space for these exchanges. We were also grateful to Perry, Mark and Laura for taking the time to sit with students, discuss their projects and offer thoughtful feedback.

We closed the day with an inspiring presentation of work by Perry’s thesis students from the University of Michigan, offering further perspectives on architectural drawing and design inquiry.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us for their curiosity, questions and engagement throughout the day.

Happy 20th Birthday @we_made_that !!! You superstars… by @smoutallen

Something different.. my dad’s (John Smout) exhibition at @midwalesarts. Structured landscapes, abstract/imagined architecture, literary referenced imagery and political work. I grew up with this all around me but seeing it here, albeit about 1/10th of his archive, is amazing. So many motifs and visual obsessions that I’d previously missed. I see him now as a talented, imaginative and dexterous artist, handling colour and transparency (so much colour and transparency!), texture form and space. Visualising with ease with large canvas oils, watercolour and the most amazing pen and pencil renderings (I’ll show some another time). Huge thanks to my mum, @smoutsabout @smoutiegram and all the friends and family who have supported him over the years. by @smoutallen

We love David’s Extreme Environments, you should buy it! There’s much here that feels close to our own interests: architecture developed through fieldwork, close observation and an inventive engagement with technology and environmental change. What makes the book distinctive in this field is the architectural design itself, the movement between being in a place, learning from it and giving form to what might be possible there. From Svalbard to the Gobi, the projects bring curiosity and experimentation to difficult questions, with careful attention to local knowledge and conditions. A pleasure to see this and dare I say a bit Bartlett-y? In fact @bartlettarchucl should be producing publications like this.. Just starting a new project 💫 FOR WORLDS ALREADY IN PROGRESS extends our Rescue Lines🌳, exploring ecological repair as a partner to architectural invention #forworldsalreadyinprogress by @smoutallen

FINALLY! We’ve put up on our website the work from our 25/26 brief #AccessToTools featuring our talented @unit11bartlett students. Lots to see including the work of this talented pair, @samfield_ and @parin.nawa , the respective winners of the Yr4 and Yr5 medal at the Bartlett last year. #unit11bartlett #architecture #architecturestudent #bartlett @bartlettarchucl by @smoutallen

We’re looking forward to a new year of fabulous Unit 11 students, and to taking LIMIT STATE out to the Mediterranean edge of Marseille and the French Riviera. Our field trip will bring us among wetlands, ports, firebreaks, industrial landscapes (including the ITER nuclear Fusion project), and the settlements that live alongside them.

Term 1, Strange Acts of Observation, asks how we see and understand places shaped by environmental change. Term 2, For Worlds Already in Progress, turns towards repair as a source of architectural invention.

Paul Virilio’s “original accident” reminds us that every technology brings the possibility of its own failure. Rob Holmes’s ‘The Problem with Solutions’ (from @places_journal)gives us another useful prompt: how can design respond to troubled landscapes without assuming that one neat fix will settle everything? Finally, a strong nod towards Ballard’s SuperCannes. We’ll investigate through fieldwork, drawings, models and architectural proposals. Expect curious observations, serious questions and plenty of architecture! @unit11bartlett @bartlettarchucl

Laura’s mum was a member of the Norwich Lacemakers. Just going through her equipment and understanding how such an immensely complex craft can be so satisfying. (Also, love the way the bobbins are often commemorative or mark a date!) With this in mind when we start an architecture school, first year Term 1 will be making a boat and a lace item using analogue methods, Term 2 same again but this time do it digitally. Everything you need to know right there- structures, form, design, sequence of construction, materials etc. Anyway, it’s all off to the @londonlaceclub who seem like great folks. #lacemaking #architecturestudent #norwich #craft #architectureschool by @smoutallen
