It was energizing for me and my fellow deans to hear President Jay Hartzell share ‘Mustang Charge: Accelerating SMU to the Forefront’ during his State of the University address and to see the ambitious and inspirational vision taking shape for SMU’s next chapter.

As dean of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, I am particularly excited about the opportunities ahead to advance transformative teaching in the liberal arts, expand the global impact of our research and scholarship, and to prepare students to become thoughtful, principled leaders.

These priorities are at the heart of what we do in Dedman College. Across the humanities, social sciences, and natural and mathematical sciences, our faculty and students ask important questions, pursue discoveries that deepen our understanding of the world, and bring ideas across disciplines together to address complex societal challenges.

I am grateful to the many members of the SMU community who contributed their ideas and perspectives throughout the strategic planning process. Now comes the exciting work of turning that shared vision into action!

Students in Anthropology 3318 - Life in the Ancient Southwest took advantage of the gorg weather and took the classroom outside. ☀️

The class, which explores human ancestry in the Southwest over the past 15,000 years, got hands-on experience with flint knapping - the process ancestral Native Americans used to create stone tools.

Students used obsidian, chert, and deer antler billets (hammers) to learn how to shape stone into cutting and piercing tools.

Sometimes the best way to understand the past is to try your hand at the techniques people used thousands of years ago. 🪨 A person in a black shirt, wearing sunglasses, kneels on the grass in a park, demonstrating a technique with leather to another seated person. A wooden tool and stone are visible on a mat near them. A table with supplies is in the background, and additional people are partially visible in the foreground. by @smudedman
