Last minute invite to meet DGT peeps, I couldn’t say no, although I tried. 🤣 Rained on and off on the way up, then sun came mostly out, but in the last bit of Mzimude Pass it started to get bitter cold. 🥶 Cave was not big enough to accommodate all of us, so slept under short overhang, just outside the cave. Full moon, and cloudless night. Next morning was frosty and frozen on the escarpment, down a gully “where it looks like you can’t get down”. Tsepeng pass. No trail until just before Sleeping Beauty Cave. #hike #hiking #nature #mountains #trail 📸 🐍 @smurf_mg by @smurf_mg
Day2, Forgot to start my watch from the cave 🤦🏻‍♀️. Woke up at 2am to still see lightning ⚡️ still flashing in the distance on the escarpment! Near rumbling started again as we set off. Windy, cold 🥶 and miserable on the escarpment(and weather report said it wasn’t going to change), so decided to rather head down Langs, instead of Giants Pass, to grab a drink 🥃 and sandwich 🥪 , before heading to Meander Hut 🛖 to meet my dad with Alex. Stumbled across @davechza talking to himself near Rock 7️⃣5️⃣too. And a random short mission to the grave site at the top of Langs. 🪦 📸 credit for cave pic @smurf_mg #mountains #drakensberg #destination #adventure #hiking by @smurf_mg
Day 1, afternoon start, Megs getting used to where all her stuff goes, and falls from, in her new pack 🤩 Weather check at Bannermans and lightning from the top which freaked me out…a lot. Had to pull out the torches 🔦 to find Bannermans cave. 📸 (frog and hut) @smurf_mg #drakensberg #mountains #hiking #adventure #destination by @smurf_mg
Upper Highway Elevation Challenge saw loads of crazies running as many loops as they could over a Saturday just to see how high they could go!! Matchday hydrating them on every loop 🍊🍋 #hydratenaturally #matchdayfuel #UHEC by @smurf_mg
Upper Highway Ultra UHU💯 We finally got around to having another UHU trail run, an informal run through Durban's trails with invites going out to friends and friends of friends. We've previously run it only going up to 50km, the 5th edition we went big and did my 100km route. 24 starters at 4am on Saturday, 7 of which had goals of doing the whole route. Well stocked aid stations were along the way courtesy of friends and family. 5 finishers made it back to Stokers between 11pm and 1am to complete a long but awesome day out! . Well done to Ayanda, Paige, Cassie and especially Michelle for dragging me along to the finish! (I had 5 weeks of almost no running due to injury, so my legs, and knee from a wipeout, were not happy) . #trailrunning #Durban #Krantzkloof #uhu by @smurf_mg
Headed to the Drakensberg for our annual Amphitheatre Backpackers June long weekend to counteract any recent road running! The snowfall a few days earlier made a 40km run from Mahai and up the Chain Ladders to tempting to miss ❄️ Sunday was spent on a more casual Tugela gorge hike, with the legs not having much left for the Big Tree Challenge on Monday. . So much all round fun! 🍺. #Drakensberg #amphitheatrebackpackers #Amphitheatre #tugelagorge #tugelafalls #southafrica #trailrunning #hiking #waterfall by @smurf_mg
Better do a post on this before I head back to the ⛰️ to set things straight! Yes I ran Comrades again, to get a Back to Back medal (which I'd never heard of until after I ran last year) . It was a decent day out except for my stomach not being happy in the last 40km (with me not eating anything in that time) The support of friends, colleagues, and random strangers is really amazing and almost makes ultra distance road running worthwhile 🤔 . #Comrades #running #westvilleac by @smurf_mg
Ultra Trail Drakensberg in the order I completed them. @ultratraildrakensberg has called this the Grand Slam, having completed all of the different distances offered 2021 - 100km ✅️ 2022 - 160km DNF ❌️ 2023 - 62km ✅️ 2024 - 160km ✅️ 2025 - 25km & 36km ✅️ . . #utd #ultratraildrakensberg #trailrunning by @smurf_mg
Ultra Trail Drakensberg 2025 ⛰️ Venturing to @ultratraildrakensberg for the 5th time, with two main goals! . Supporting @denzil_world and @fitabulous_adventure on their 100 miler, could not be more happy for them as they crossed the finish line to get those medals and cowbells! When the race photographer sheds a few tears while taking the photos you know! . Secondary goal was to complete my set of UTD medals by running the DRJ25km and SDR36km, on the same day. Had to run the 25km fairly hard to try get to the 36km start on time, @stevengossman joined me on this mission and we started the 2nd race only 8 minutes late. Wasn't expecting anything for this, but the UTD team included it in the awards ceremony with the 3 of us (Zoog and Annette) getting a Lesotho 🇱🇸 blanket and to stand on the podium. . Now to figure out what to do at UTD in 2026... . . #Drakensberg #trailrunning #ultratraildrakensberg #southafrica #southerndrakensberg #mountains #utd by @smurf_mg
Another epic few days spent at Mnweni in the Northern Drakensberg. This time we were supporting Arno and Mix on their crazy @walkinghomesa journey! Friday was a short day to Cycad cave, thankfully it was warm so we managed to use 3 sleeping bags between 5 of us. Saturday was then up the always challenging Ifidi pass, about half way up I somehow dislodged a boulder which rolled and pinned my leg against another rock on either side of my knee, thankfully Scott was right behind me and could get it off quickly, was very lucky to escape with just some bad bruising and scrapes! We were then treated to an afternoon storm and hail on the very wet and swampy escarpment, before getting to Fangs cave mid afternoon. Sunday it was down Rwanqa pass where we met up with the resupply crew before loads of unpleasant bushwacking just to add a few more decorations to our legs. . . #Drakensberg #hiking #mountains ##southafrica #Mnweni by @smurf_mg
Awesome few days in Cape Town mainly heading down for FokOffDay (Fokoffpolisiekar, Offspring and Green Day) 🤘 taking me back to the 90s! Took the opportunity to watch some cricket at Newlands, and of cos go for a run up Table Mountain ⛰️ expertly guided by @zinskwenche . . #trailrunning #Capetown #tablemountain #newlands #greenday #fokoffday #Offspring by @smurf_mg
Started 2025 with an awesome chilled hike around Bushmans Nek in the Drakensberg. Night 1 up to Tarn cave, then exploring Sehlabathebe National Park with its amazing rock formations, tarns and Irish cave, lunch stop at Citadel with more crazy rocks, then down to Thomathu cave for night 2. ⛰️ . . #Drakensberg #southerndrakensberg #bushmansnek #mountains #hiking #southafrica by @smurf_mg
