Sometimes we do the same with life, it passes as swiftly as the flash of a camera, and we try to avoid thinking about it. One of the deepest fears of someone who emigrates is not being able to say goodbye to a loved one. With every step we take on this long and uphill journey, the weight of our decision grows silently. It accumulates with the days, becomes heavier with distance, and more inevitable with the passing of time… until the moment arrives when that weight becomes impossible to measure and simply paralyzes us when what we feared the most finally happens: the day of goodbye. That day may come with the presence or the absence of that person. It arrives suddenly, like a cold shower. You don’t expect it, and with all your heart you wish it were not so. It is a goodbye that hurts, because the pain reaches you amplified through the words of other loved ones. A goodbye that breaks in and forever changes the way we look at life. Today comes the farewell to that very special person who once illuminated and transformed the hearts he touched. Positivity and serenity are, without a doubt, your greatest legacy; one could say you were truly a master of both. With the deepest sorrow, today I have to say goodbye, even though I could not say farewell to you in person. It is a goodbye in which I wish you the same serenity that you taught us during life’s most turbulent moments. Goodbye, my dear friend, uncle, and faithful companion to my second and third mother.
