That red slash under the jaw? It’s the mark of the Westslope Cutthroat Trout—one of Idaho’s most underrated native fish. In Part 9 of Catching Every Type of Trout in Idaho, we dive into what makes this subspecies so unique, from their fiery coloration to their historical role in Idaho’s wild rivers.

Today, Westslopes face pressure from invasive species like rainbow and brook trout, leading to hybridization and habitat loss. Through special fishing regulations and ongoing conservation efforts, Idaho is working to protect these fish while still giving anglers a chance to connect with them.

We also put the Burnt Toast Balanced Leech from @snakeriverfly to work—my go-to fly for trout in rivers and stillwater everywhere. It’s versatile, easy to tie, and flat-out produces. Huge thanks to my friends at Snake River Fly for sponsoring this episode—grab the fly or tie your own by visiting SnakeRiverFly.com, or by tapping the link in my bio.
