Powerful discourse has been used by multiple presidential campaigns to push legislation. “Black women, typically those who were single mothers, were scapegoated and misconstrued by those who wanted to implement welfare reforms.” @https://prospect.org/2025/11/14/snap-welfare-queen/ breaks down stereotypes and powerful discourse associated with those receiving welfare / public assistance and what it is often said about those who are immigrants, people of color or undocumented. When we talk about work requirements there are different activities that may count such as working a job, attending job training or participating in certain approved activities. However, not everyone has the same access to these opportunities. Some people may struggle to find work or get the resources they need. We should remember that meeting these requirements is not always as easy as it sounds.

When people don’t have to worry as much about where their next meal will come from they can focus more on their health, their families and their future goals. Awareness surrounding political debates and policies where powerful ideological stereotypes and racist stigmas are formed to encourage support in creating changes in welfare reform is not the manner in which federal programs such as Medicaid and Snap should receive political attention.

Politicians are concerned about recipients receiving welfare benefits and have used language such as “welfare queen” recently to describe individuals who receive benefits as lazy, jobless, gamers and eating junk food. The controversy surrounding this political ad/campaign- had been the use of a ‘white’ male and received backlash.

The derogatory terminology ‘welfare queen’ shouldn’t be reserved for anyone. And the fact that individuals are upset a black woman wasn’t represented in the political campaign is disturbing.

Many people face challenges that can make it difficult to work or meet SNAP work requirements. Things like finding childcare, paying for transportation or dealing with health issues can make everyday life harder. Some people are trying their best but still struggle because they don’t have enough support.
