After nearly two years of hard times furious dancing and constant touring, Snapped Ankles will be returning to the forest for a well earned hibernation. Their final act of public ritual will be to observe the winter solstice of 2026. You are invited to join them in this most hallowed of traditions. Also attending the evening’s rituals will be our favourite masked and mischievous allies Mermaid Chunky and TaliaBle to form an evening that will invoke all that is fun and furious about the winter peak. Join the last pagans in town at Earth Hall in Hackney N16 on 17th December. Bring Your own winter mask or forest costume, optional but fully encouraged!! you never know it might still be a warm summer this winter anyway! by @snappedankles

A couple days ago we announced Malcolm Catto’s Quatermass Sound Lab compilation, with the lead single Shopping Parade from the prolific post-punk group @snappedankles

Shopping Parade is a pounding lament for that increasingly endangered British habitat: the market town high street. Once the centre of civic life, commerce and mild public inconvenience, the high street has become a familiar parade of shuttered shops, boarded-up windows and opportunities to convert former banks into luxury flats.

In Shopping Parade, Snapped Ankles survey the ruins and find themselves drawn to West Midlands town Atherstone on a wet Shrove Tuesday, where the boarded-up town centre provides the perfect arena for one of Britain’s surviving medieval traditions: mob football.

Produced and engineered by Malcolm Catto, Shopping Parade builds its tension steadily before erupting into a violent barrage of pounding drums - a chance to let off steam in every sense. In Atherstone, steaming rucks fill the streets as bodies collide in a ritual that is part sport, part pagan survival mechanism and part unofficial town-planning consultation.

More than a producer retrospective, Quatermass Sound Lab is a portrait of an artist whose fingerprints can be found across some of the most adventurous records of the last twenty years.

Humans, machines or woodland spirits, Snapped Ankles have always presented that they maintain the feral energy of the forest, as communicated by their frantic motorik rhythms and driving dance punk energy. Embracing ghillie-suit camouflage and the power of masked appearances long before Angine de Poitrine, the band’s strange, playful world-building has helped them cultivate an enthusiastic cult audience beyond traditional post-punk circles, as well as among performance art fans and DIY collectives eager to immerse themselves in the band’s ecological themes and anticapitalist world.
