Earlier this year, I completed the Camino Francés pilgrimage, walking 830km over 39 days from the northeast of Spain, near the French border, across the country to the Atlantic Ocean.

I’ve appreciated slow travel for a while, but this was another level. Walking from town to town with no set goal or schedule, stopping along the way to see what was around, talk to people, meet locals, shopkeepers and bartenders, and get to know other pilgrims, only to bump into them again weeks and hundreds of kilometres later.

At the start, you wonder if you’re capable of walking that far, and what the point of it all is. By the end, it feels strange not to walk 20km in a day, and you wonder what you’re going to do without it. 🥾

Anyone who has travelled in Europe knows you will probably see a lot of churches, and anything you see a lot of while travelling, you will start to desensitise to and lose some of the wondrousness. Because of this, I didn’t have any particular preconceptions before walking into the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. Most of my travel moments in which I have truly been awe-inspired have almost always been in landscapes and natural environments.
