The koppies around Joburg were once dotted with iron-smelting settlements. Melville Koppies is one of the last places where you can still see one of these smelters, and from today, this Sunday, you can watch it come back to life. 🔥

Point your phone at the ancient furnace and see a 3D reconstruction of exactly how Batswana iron masters worked this ridge 500 years ago. A joint project by UJ’s Metaverse Research Unit and the Friends of Melville Koppies.

🚶 Or walk straight to the smelter and explore at your own pace

It started with @jozi_my_jozi, where we took people on an immersive walk through our neighbourhood and discovered just how much there was to share. 🌿

When the Melville Art Mile came together, it all clicked.

The art. The people. The stories. The spaces.

The tour became an extension of that original experience, a way to explore Melville through the people and creativity that make it what it is.

artist spotlight: Mr.Ëksê 🎨

this month’s poster comes from graffiti artist Mr.Ëksê, a son of orlando west who has spent almost 30 years turning the streets of soweto into something electric. formally trained in photography, printmaking and multimedia art, he ultimately chose the streets as his canvas.

he has helped transform forgotten spaces into open-air galleries, guided by a simple belief: “we create beautiful spaces out of forgotten places.”

now, his work comes to melville. ✨ find Mr.Ëksê at Indoni Art House on thursday, 1 october, as we celebrate melville’s 130th birthday.
