In recent years, the fight to protect native strains of maíz was fueled by the phrase, “Sin maíz no hay país,” created to protest the importing and planting of genetically engineered corn. The cultivation of maize is the crux of Mexican history; it’s persisted through time, from the Mayans believing that the gods created humans from masa (corn dough) to the culturally significant provisions like the tortilla and atole—both as ancient as the former legend itself.

The crop that birthed a nation, reimagined as the natural site of human conception. MA(TR)ÍZ serves as an altar of resistance, dedicated to the female body, Mexican soil, and their caregivers.

The possession of the organ demonstrated in this artwork isn’t what makes a woman, but it is rather our practice of deriving our power and demanding our liberation through creation. by @snc5nc

Comandanta Ramona, a key figure in the Zapatista movement, lucho para los derechos de mujeres, indigenous groups, and artisans while creating the capability and capacity for indigenous women to exercise their civic rights and military participation during the movement.

In this print, I combined the mesoamerican olin (ollín) symbol with the venus symbol to create a sign that I have since resonated and dreamed with—a conglomerate of movement (of the sun) and womanhood/femininity—one that eternalizes the ongoing women’s movement. Throughout my body of artwork, I want to demonstrate my dedication to womanhood in all its facets, particularly when it comes to developments in the Americas, and this franken-symbol is the starting line(s). by @snc5nc

happy juneteenth, the yearly reminder to renew our commitment to freedom, in the words of Angela Davis, whom the text in this print is derived from. let us not forget that stratification and apathy are barriers to our own freedom, and attempting to master others reflects the subjugation of our own minds.
