Chilling in the borrowed backyard for some sun (cause I need it), some bevies (cause I like em), and some words of wisdom (cause I crave them). Spend your peaceful time my friends anyway you want. So long as the purchase is for contentment and happiness… the price is worth it!

Burdock West Coast Pale Ale - Toronto

An amber you would find in any Jurassic movie but luckily without any insects in it. As a hop heavy brew it does have a slight haze keeping it from a crystal clear view. The aromas of the WC Pale seem to come from a fruit basket… citrus and tropical mixed well with the nutty noted from the malt (more on the malt in a bit).

The first sip confirmed the flavours my nose basked in previously. Tropical and citrus waltzed with a heavier caramel nuttiness and ended with my favourite bitterness. The WC Pale Ale uses a Munich malt which gives a richer toast nut flavour. It has a smooth medium body and carbonation that finishes dry with a lingering citrus.

I’ve not had many WC Pale Ales (the count sits at 1 so far) but I can envision a table laden with pizza and wings and using Burdocks to cleanse the palette. Rinse and repeat!

Hunter Rating 9/10 for Summer

St Andre Bohemin Lager - Toronto

Another pale gold brew glimmering in the glass. A Bohemian lager recipe and style St Andre has evolved from the old Prague style of brewing similar to pilsners using a mix of hops and malt (bitter and sweet).

The aromas are mild and quickly missed in a flavour heavy environment (around the bbq, fire pit or in the kitchen around a heavily laden stovetop. Like most of the crafts so far the usual suspects of nutty, malt and hops but they are an ensemble.

Flavours bring forth some grain, malt and finishes with a slight bitterness almost after the fact. It is a smooth, dry finish with a surprising level of carbonation hiding dormant in the glass to jump scare you later.

The origins of the Bohemian Lager still brings it in line to pair with richer foods… pulling from the European aisle… roast chicken, bratwurst, schnitzel or cheeses like Havarti or Gouda.

Hunter Rating 8/10 - for Summer

Avling Pilsner - Toronto

I have never understood the difference between a Pilsner and an Ale. Digging into it… it’s not an ale but more of a lager. A pilsner has what is called a bottom fermenting yeast in a cold environment whereas Ale is top fermentation in a warm environment. The slight changes bring about a different profile while using the same ingredients I guess. (Holding hand to his ear) What’s that sound?
Sounds like: segue!

Avling Kitchen & Brewery focuses heavily on Ontario-grown ingredients and local agriculture, which is a major part of their brewing philosophy. Love Local!

Pours with a brilliant gold colour but had a slight haze. I panicked and thought I had gotten a rattler but alas I made no such blunder; depending on the batch of pilsner purchased the clarity can shift based on ingredients, time of year brewed etc. The result was mild carbonation giving off florals and herbal hop aroma.
The drink had a firm bitterness (as a Guinness drinker - me likey!), some malt overtones and a dry refreshing finish. Great for summer and only coming in at 4.9%

Hunter Rating 8.5/10 for Summer.

Collective Arts - Hamilton

Greeted with an inviting pale gold with a foamy head that lasts a while. Nothing more disheartening to look over at your brew and panic that it has gone flat. No worries here! Bringing the pint to your face holes lets the florals set the tone - tell tale malt and grain (almost like bread) with some hops to round out the introduction.

The first drink encompasses the aromas ( sweet, hops, nutty) with a back of the mouth bitterness… all of it quickly dissipating, ready for the next indulgence. Light bodied, crisp with no heaviness or quick bloating feeling. The malt and hop add a distinct flavour from the normal everyday lager, it lets you know they stand out.

Another stand out: as mentioned in the initial post - each can has a QR code to win an artist designed snowboard. My can (ver 2 of 4) was a work by @jessagilbert. Not into boarding.. no worries as there are other prizes (like beer for a year!) to win.

At 4.9%, it would be unwise to indulge too quickly but it is refreshing for the backyard gatherings or patio dwelling watching the world walk past.

Muskoka Cream Ale - Bracebridge
Deep gold pour instead of the pale straw with an off coloured head.. this struck me as the most odd feature. I admit to digging a bit just in case but it is the toasted malt. Once poured you are greeted with (not just a lovely local beer but) hints of sweet - toffee or caramel, nutty notes (which I discovered are also described as biscuit or cracker flavours) and some hops.

First sips bring on the hops and some caramel and even a touch of orange (it was bizarre my Snowbies… had to take a 2nd and 3rd taste to pin it down. Even had to stand on one leg, rub my belly and tap my head to achieve the flavour again!). It was so subtle I would drop it into the category of IPA or even the dreaded Rattler.
Yes… I have opinions about THOSE drinks.

A cream ale is creamy and this lives up - smooth finish that would add to a BBQ.. but in my opinion… a well spread charcuterie board with sharp cheddar! Perfect pairing!
5% and local -driving you to build a meat board from local dairy farms and butchers? Yes please!

Hunter Rating 8/10 - Great drink for gatherings and BBQs. Sitting dockside watching the world float by can be done easily with this drink in hand.

Cowbell Standard - Blyth
Clear light gold pour. Aromatics are hinted but nothing jumps out at you, medium flavour profile. A crisp drink which is a perfect accompaniment to a hot day. It is a light beer coming in at 4% and once chilled it will flow like a mountain spring. Backyard DIY or at the cottage with a handful of horseshoes - this is perfect.
Since there is no hops bursting out to identify themselves and try cheesy 80s pick up lines on you this pairs well with burgers and dogs and accumulated friends.

Hunter Rating 8/10 - Fabulous summertime bevy in the hot sun. Once the sun goes down and the chilly 18C degree night air comes in… I would (personally) most likely switch over to a tangy cocktail or two. This is a great drink for daytime but alas, Snowbound would turn to something spicier when the moon rises.

Note: music provided by local homegrown artist LOLO. Lauren has put out her second album “god forbid a girl spits out her feelings”. It’s awesome, she’s awesome, and you are awesome if you give her albums (“Falling for robots and wishing I was one”) a listen, follow and thumbs up! Go Lauren! Toronto Love!

Organic Amber - London

Rich clear amber colour, sweet aroma, hints of malt and florals. High carbonation
Creamy texture with slight bitterness along the edges of the tongue. Caramel flavours dance on the tastebuds and quickly disappear like a 1970 womanizer leaving behind a minuscule hoppy trace.

Easy drinking with each sip requesting an encore… an ideal partner for a patio with foods containing a little spice. At 4.2% it would be a sneaky beverage so beware.

Hunter Rating (*biased - I am an amber/red fan) 8/10. Great drink for Summer where the carbonation would be great for clearing the palate for more food (BBQ anyone?). My only personal drawback would be the caramel malt flavours. They are not overpowering in any stretch of the word but they are present… enough that it would have me switching up to a lighter lager from time to time to offset the sweetness.
