TL//DR: I love my parents 💚

This post is about my mom and dad, Joe and Anilu.

(Fun fact, my name is actually an anagram of both my parent’s names!)

Earlier today, I saw a post talking about “mom lore” and “dad lore” and it made me reflect on how much my parents have truly been through in their lives and how grateful I am to have them. Neither my mom or dad had the best childhood, growing up poor in Puerto Rico with issues I couldn’t even fathom going through.

Later on in life, my parents had to drop out of high school after my mom became pregnant with my older brother. Later, they moved to PA shortly after I was born, living in a tiny apartment with two children and a third on the way.

Constantly fighting financial and emotional struggle throughout the whole way, my dad worked one shitty job after another to provide for his family, destroying his body to provide for his wife and children. My mom also worked job after job, putting herself through the wringer mentally balancing full time jobs, raising her children, and doing all of the house work.

For years, my parents struggled to give their children everything they could ever want. My mom has been a shoulder to cry on, and my guiding compass in life. My mom showed me how powerful and beautiful women truly are. My dad introduced me to video games and movies, he cultured me and raised me to the absolute nerd that I am now. He also bought me my first ever guitar that will always remain my favorite.

So when people ask me, “what’s your last name?” I’ll never say just colon or just Rosario. My last name is Colon Rosario because to me, it represents the years of struggle and love my parents went through to make me the man I am today.

So even though I may act frustrating, even though a lot of times I act ungrateful, And even though I don’t show it or say it directly often, I love you mom and dad, I couldn’t have asked for a better family.

Just about 2 weeks ago, Juan had suggested for me to play with his band, rotting fruit. Within those 2 weeks, I learned and improvised a setlist of some of the most fun songs I’ve ever had the privilege of playing live. I am so grateful to both Matt and Juan for giving me the opportunity to join rotting fruit as their bassist as well as giving DoA their first official show // spotlight as a band. I also cannot thank my band mates enough for working their asses off to learn the setlist on such short notice and rocking the fuck out.

This is only the beginning, so be sure to come to our show February 10th to experience not just amazing music but also amazing people as well. Again, thank you all so much for showing up and listening to both of my bands and experiencing this absolutely amazing experience with me.
