The Maldives is facing a severe cat overpopulation crisis. With the country’s first animal shelter newly built and government officials initially welcoming our help, we went there prepared to fully fund a spay and neuter project.

We thought the Maldives was ready.

Seven months later, we walked away.

But what we learned deserves to be shared.

Your cat has absolutely no idea what’s going on… No job. No bills. No concept of preventative healthcare. And they probably think the vacuum is trying to eat them 🙃

But somehow, you’re in charge of all their major life decisions. Spaying and neutering is usually talked about as a way to prevent unwanted litters. And yes, that’s a pretty big reason. But it’s not the only one.

Spaying and neutering isn’t just about the cats who won’t be born. It’s about the one sitting right in front of you, too.

Eight tiny puppies depended on Maple for everything. She had no home, no safe place to raise them. And, as her rescuers would soon discover, she had cancer 🥺

In Tres Reyes, a neighborhood in the Cancun area marked by dirt roads and limited access to veterinary care, Maple was raising her babies in the bushes the only way she could: keeping them close, nursing them, and getting through another day.

That was where @islaanimals’ team found her while bringing dogs in for spay and neuter surgeries funded by SNPT’s first Snip the Cycle grant.

They found one mother. They brought nine lives into care.

Maple was spayed, and during her exam, the team discovered CTVT (canine transmissible venereal tumor), a cancer that can spread between dogs through mating or direct contact with a tumor.

While she had been caring for eight little lives, she had needed help herself.

Now, thanks to Isla Animals, Maple is beginning chemotherapy with her puppies safe beside her. She has people watching over her, treatment ahead of her, and a chance to heal. Their amazing team brought this family to safety and committed to the care that came next. We are so grateful Maple found her way into their hands.

These will be the last babies she ever has to raise. When they’re old enough, all eight will also be spayed and neutered through our grant. The cycle ends with this little family ⛓️‍💥

Maple’s story is why we look so closely at the organizations we fund, and what happens to the animals in their care after surgery.

We want to understand how animals recover, what follow-up care is available, and whether an organization has the resources to help when an exam reveals something more. These questions carry real weight. For an animal like Maple, the answers can shape the rest of her life.

The blocky heads. The little wiggles: The complete disregard for personal space 🥰

But behind the cute videos is a reputation that can make finding a home harder. In one 2016 shelter study, dogs labeled “pit bull” waited more than three times as long for adoption as similar-looking dogs with different labels: about 42 days versus 13.

And a 2022 study found that breed explained only about 9% of the variation in the dog behaviors researchers measured. A breed label can’t tell you everything about the dog in front of you.

Every dog deserves to be understood as an individual, with their own personality, needs, and quirks. Including these big-headed babies. 🤍

Applications for SNPT’s Fall 2026 Snip the Cycle grant cycle open October 15.

A total of $20,000 will be awarded to selected nonprofit organizations providing free, high-quality spay and neuter services. Organizations based in the United States and internationally are eligible to apply.

Funding will support dog and/or cat sterilization programs serving free-roaming animals, community animals, and pets in underserved communities.

Applications close November 15. Eligibility requirements and application instructions are available through the link in our bio.

If you’ve ever cried over a rescue video, shared an urgent foster post, or begged someone to adopt, you should be screaming just as hard for spay and neuter 🗣️

That feeling of “I wish I could save them all”? Put some of it here. Into affordable spay/neuter. Into helping someone who wants to get their pet fixed but can’t afford it. Into giving exhausted rescuers fewer animals to worry about tonight.

Keep sharing the dogs who need homes. Keep showing up for animal rescues. Just bring that same heart to prevention. Because “I wish this never happened to them” deserves more than a comment. It deserves funding.

Our greatest wish has never been for ourselves. It’s for fewer dogs and cats to be born into homelessness, hunger, and suffering.

This wish doesn’t require magic, we already have the power to make it come true. By spaying and neutering, we can prevent suffering before it begins, reduce the number of animals born into life on the streets, and create a kinder future for them all.
