Soooo. Where to begin with this one? I first met @from_sketch_to_watch of @schaerer_watches in 2023, during Watches and Wonders. Mind you, I didn't visit the fair. I just flew out for one day upon @aguy2watch invitation to join him and a few friends and fellow collectors on an indie tour through Geneva. The highlight of the trip was a luncheon where collectors and independent creators came together to chat life and watches. This is where I met Stefan. And for some reason, his was the watch that stood out to me the most, out of all the other impressive creations I saw that day. Perhaps it's because I see a lot of myself in Stefan - there is a hint of obsessive perfectionism, more modesty than is good for him, a sprinkling or two of self-doubt, and tremendous pride in his work. Or maybe it's because Stefan's watch bears his fingerprints every step toward its creation, in an indie space that seems to be moving wholly toward an approach where a long list of collaborators work together to realize the vision of a brand founder acting in a project management capacity. I don't want to disparage the latter approach, but there is something truly soulful in knowing that one man designed, CNC'd, turned, brushed, polished, finished a whole watch from beginning to end. Sure, some parts couldn't be made in-house, but I'm sure that Stefan, if left to his own devices, would want to tackle those too. Thankfully, however, his souscription customers demanded delivery this decade 😜, and that is why we have the Pyramis Sapphire Blue, or in the case of the piece unique Number 4, the "Pyramis Peacock". I was fortunate to spend time with Stefan and with this absolutely gorgeous timepiece recently. I am a nerd at heart. I grew up watching Star Wars, reading Isaac Asimov, and playing Halo 3 split-screen with my friends sitting on the couch. Gaming as it was meant to be.  I'm a contrarian. I remember doing the opposite of the latest trends while I was in school, just for the comfort of knowing that I wasn't following the herd. Naturally, I wasn't the most popular kid in class! I honestly don't remember when I first encountered @urwerkgeneve or their creations. All I know is that, during the pandemic, I had caught the neovintage bug and was collecting what I considered to be underrated references of the 80s and 90s, those that had been overlooked in favor of the hottest commodities of the day. The neovintage fever dream passed - I matured as a collector and realized that precious metal just did not fit my character. It was too buttoned-up, too formal, too chic.  I think it must have been a video done by @tim_mosso that sparked my interest. I can't remember if it was specifically a video about UR-103 or a different reference, but whatever I saw captured my imagination like no other watch brand before. I researched the manufature's trajectory and landed on the 103. From that minute onward, I obsessed over it. The sensuous curvature of the case, the mesmerizing reflections and shadows cast by the complex sapphire, the organic nature of the case. Here was a watch that was just plain cool. And it even is a neointage watch in its own right, capturing the zeitgeist of the dawn of indies. Cue 2024 when I traveled to Geneva for my first Watches & Wonders, courtesy of @aguy2watch. As part of our indie tour through the city, we visited the fine folks at Urwerk, of course. And there I finally was able to try it on, the 103 in rose gold. It clicked instantly. All fears, all trepidation, were instantly washed away. I instantly started the hunt for a 103 I could call my own. I opted for the 103.08. Space age, with a material science twist.  And hell, with its gorgeous purple hue, it even looks a bit like a Covenant ship! The circle was complete. Chopard hit it out of the park with the Mk IV Quattro - both versions are accomplished, and the decision to move the PR indicator to the movement side seems to have been received well by collectors. Personally, I like that the legacy of the dials made by @metalem_sa has been continued into the latest iteration of this model line. Never thought I'd find my forever watch in the @urwerkgeneve UR-103.08. Until I purchased this piece, I'd come to appreciate, and collect: 1) neovintage pieces in precious metal cases 2) classic complications (e.g. chronograph, calendar) 3) slim profiles 4) compact dimensions The UR-103 doesn't tick any of those boxes. And yet, I can't imagine ever selling this watch. There's something about it that just sings to me. The elegant curves, the mysterious way it displays time, the color of the case, the sensuous curvature of the crystal... This hobby of ours - who said it has to be a rational endeavor? 😉 Jacket is made by independent label @kma_mode out of upcycled surplus Italian military tents.
