Scientific glassblowers in Suffolk have enhanced some of our most distinctive lighting designs with fluted glass shades – particularly atmospheric when used with candles. The fluted form of the ‘Verandah’ hurricane light is made of infinitely recyclable, heat-resistant glass. Whilst spinning on a lathe over a Bunsen burner, the glassblowers work quickly and precisely to force air into a molten glass tube before forming the rounded base and elegant, curved lip. The Rattan Wardington Tray is inspired by an antique design belonging to Soane’s rattan archive. Made in our Leicestershire workshop, it has a generous woven base flanked by pockets for books or newspapers, and is perfect for breakfast-in-bed. In this laundry, Patanga in Azure, designed by Charlotte Johnstone, is paired with Sophie Coryndon’s medieval-inspired Wilton Vine, which has been used as cupboard curtains. Soane’s metal pieces are created by a number of small and typically family-owned workshops, each with their own specialisation. It is the combination of traditional and cutting-edge techniques that underpin all Soane's designs. The Owl lantern, for instance, is made by welding layers of brass 'feathers' to a bodice-like frame whose teardrop shape casts a wonderful dappled light. Days like today make us think of one thing only: lolling under the shade of a loggia on a rattan daybed. This one is a 1920s design by Benjamin Fletcher, made by Dryad in Leicestershire. For the past 15 years Soane has worked with a family run mill in Kent to develop our most complex, finely drawn patterns. Flat-bed silk screen techniques are used to print new fabrics that recreate the atmosphere and depth of the antique pieces that inspire them. The process requires two craftspeople to work in perfect unison: here, makers Sam and Adam are printing Dianthus Chintz, for which ten screens were engraved to faithfully reproduce the colours of the original 18th-century Coromandel Coast sarong. Legend has it that it was in this kitchen that a 1000 egg omelette was made for Carlo V and his army who were passing through Campania on their journey to Rome following the successful Tunis campaign in 1535. I suspect few of us would quibble with this task given the extraordinary beauty of the vast kitchen here in the Certosa di Padula, the largest monastery in Italy. The late baroque renovations to the Carthusian complex, founded in 1306, included the addition of these tiles, the colours chosen because the monks believed that their vivid hues repelled insects. The Aten Fluted Hurricane light is made by Michael, an incredibly talented coppersmith, based in Newlyn, Cornwall. The fluted glass shade is made by scientific glassblowers in Suffolk. The glow of the candle flame (or bulb for those who choose to electrify) is reflected in the subtly curved brass disc, giving a surprising amount of light especially in the evening. ‘Chairs are often a real challenge: the details are so precise and can be quite fiddly, and they’ve obviously got to sit just right. Your hands are the best tools in your box. You just need to rely on them and trust them’ says Paul Tynan, a fine chair maker based in Soane’s carpentry workshop in Dorset. Paul has worked with Soane for over 13 years, making some of our most long-standing designs, including the Quiver Klismos Chair, as well as teaching our apprentices.
