I brought my own bottle to my birthday dinner.

The waiter asked if I wanted the wine list. I said no thanks, then pulled a French Bloom out of my bag like I was getting away with something. He just smiled. Same pour, same little hiss, same gold in the candlelight.

And it hit me. Every birthday before getting sober, I thought the alcohol was the point. The toast, the clink, the “to you.”

It was never the alcohol. It was the ritual.

The people leaning in. The glass up. The pause where everyone looks at you and means it. That’s the part I didn’t want to lose, and I didn’t lose any of it. I just got to keep the rest of the night too. The conversation I still remember. The clear drive home. Waking up ready instead of wrecked.

I live 10 minutes from where this beer is made.
OYÁ was born in Cascais, the same town where I drop my daughter at school, buy my groceries, watch the Atlantic from the fort wall on a Tuesday morning.
And now they make one of the best non-alcoholic beers I’ve ever had.
The Goose Passion Sour is tart, tropical, cold. It tastes like something you’d drink on a boat without apologizing for it.
