Ukrainian artist 🇺🇦
In a long-term relationship with clay

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Nadia Sobko is an artist who lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine. She holds a Master’s degree from the Department of Artistic Ceramics at the Lviv National Academy of Arts and describes herself as being in a long-term open relationship with clay — one that allows her to constantly experiment with different materials.

In 2021, receiving the Gaude Polonia scholarship became an important turning point in her practice and strengthened her decision to dedicate her life to art.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Sobko’s artistic practice has also become a way of speaking about the war internationally. Through exhibitions, projects and residencies abroad, she has sought to speak about Ukraine and to make her position as a civilian useful to her country during this difficult time.

Today, she continues to work across materials and contexts, searching for new artistic opportunities and challenges while living and working in Kyiv.

Her work has been presented through solo and group exhibitions and international residencies in Ukraine, Poland, Austria, Israel, Germany, Georgia, Finland and France.

How can something so familiar suddenly take on new meaning?

This October, Pickle Underground presents The Weight of Hair, a contemporary group exhibition bringing together seven women artists working across Ukrainian, Bangladeshi and Canadian cultural contexts.

Intimate and public. Personal and political. Ordinary and deeply symbolic. Across cultures, hair has marked identity, belonging, ritual, mourning, resistance and beauty. Through installation, sculpture, photography, textiles, video and interdisciplinary practices, the participating artists approach hair through stories of memory, identity, culture, the body, care and control.

Participating artists:
Anna Pidgorna @anna_pidgorna_composer
Asma Sultana @meetasultana
Nadia Sobko @sobkonadya
Olena Kayinska @olena_kayinska_art
Olexandra Pavlovska @olexandra.pavlovska_art
Olha Skliarska @atriz_ma
Roksolana Uhryniuk @roksolana.uhryniuk

Curated by Roksolana Uhryniuk

Presented at The Highbrow, Pickle Underground’s artist-run studio and exhibition space inside a private apartment, the exhibition invites visitors to encounter the works within an intimate domestic setting.

The Weight of Hair opens October 2 and joins the 2026 New West Cultural Crawl on October 3–4.
During the Cultural Crawl weekend, visit the exhibition at your own pace or join one of our free curator-led tours.

Nadiia Sobko is a Ukrainian multidisciplinary artist, polyamorous in art — simultaneously researching and experimenting with different materials and practices. She lost her artistic virtue to ceramics, and their relationship already has a very long history.

On February 24, 2022, her life changed irrevocably. Russia started a full-scale war in Ukraine, and for a while, she died as an artist.

Now she lives in Kyiv and tries to be helpful. She struggles with constant guilt — that she’s not doing enough — embroidering with her own hair, looking for new opportunities and challenges, as an artist and as a slightly tired person.

Welcome, Nadiia! 🫂🩵 by @sobkonadya

Nadya Sobko
Curated by Clemens Poole

Taïná is a solo exhibition of new works by @sobkonadya, produced during her residency at @printostan. Activating the analog layering possibilities of the silkscreen technique, Sobko’s project revolves around experimental iterations of a composite image that is part elementary school portrait of the artist and part religious icon. As a child, Sobko participated ceremonially at her church, and this left a lasting impression on her as a contributor to a space where tangible and intangible powers touch humans, resonating with a range of timbres, from solemn to absurd. The smeared separation of these contradictory qualities, shared by art and religion, appears in the visual language of the prints and objects on view in the gallery.

Merged with the elaborate pageantry of the church, its relics and fetishes, the fantasy princess accoutrements of Sobko’s first grade portrait reveal themselves to possess a comparable ritual status. Even the anonymous authors of both appropriated images—a painter of mass-produced sacred icons and a photographer from a suburban studio—become peers. Their personal embellishments are calculated creative signatures, but are also certain to be largely lost on objects destined to be creased in wallets or collecting dust on dashboards. For Sobko, however, these details become parts of the cosmography of her practice. Her appropriation of their images to produce her own iterative, tactile, and even consumable works, probes the originals’ place at the human intersection of sacred and profane.

In addition to artwork as devotional object, Sobko explores another gesture, in conversation with, or as a quotation of, religious mystery. A sacrament is offered, the transmuted body is consumed, and, we can presume, grace is imparted on the initiate. As an art object, or participatory intervention, the edible icon/portrait gives itself without precondition, in the open space of the gallery. However, dogma, twinned in contemporary art and religion, asks us: is there some transformative power that this artistic sacrament might have over us, once it has entered our bodies? taken in Kyiv, Ukraine by @sobkonadya

Meet @sobkonadya , a participant in our first silkscreen art residency.

The artist lives and works between Kyiv and Lviv, while also spontaneously carrying out projects abroad. Nadia, in her own words, is in a long-term polyamorous relationship with clay, experiments with various materials, and embroiders with hair—and previously had no experience working with silkscreen printing.

We were inspired to select Nadia for the residency by her honestly articulated intention to seek new opportunities for realizing an artistic project, her sculptural thinking, and the multidisciplinary nature of her portfolio.

Very soon, we will be summarizing the results of Nadia’s residency at the Printostan studio. Stay tuned for the exhibition announcement ✨

I continue to successfully scatter hairs, with which I now embroider texts. Maybe one day I will write an entire book like this.
Thanks again @gregoiredelanos for the photo💛 taken in Clermont-Ferrand, France by @sobkonadya

I once believed that I was guaranteed a place in heaven if I didn't miss my Sunday confession. So, when I was still very young, I would kneel down every Sunday in front of the priest and try to think of how else I could have sinned in the past 7 days. I still remember this strange and very intimate atmosphere of sacred shame. Now I kneel down in completely different circumstances. But the shame and the different flavors of guilt only become more and more.

I was very happy to remind myself a little about painting, thanks to Chalet Lecoq for hospitality.

Thanks to @gregoiredelanos for the shared experience and for the photo 💛 taken in Clermont-Ferrand, France by @sobkonadya
